Compatibility: Astro Love
Compatibility where astrology is concerned is often misunderstood, in my opinion. The usual context is to have a comparison reading for lovers, but comparisons can also be cast for relationships between parent and child, friends, and even between you and your boss. If you've been in a particular relationship for any length of time, a comparison of charts will usually confirm what you already know – if you're self-aware. That is, the reading will tend to highlight aspects of your relationship that you are already aware of – both good and bad. However, if you are just starting out in a new relationship, or you would like to gain greater insight into an ongoing relationship, comparison readings can be quite helpful. This can be particularly true for individuals that have a track record of unhappy relationships. Then you can get some insight into where the problems lie and how to go about circumventing or resolving the issues at hand. Many psychologists and not a few astrologers believe that, contrary to popular belief, we are not drawn to particular individuals merely for connubial bliss. The romance and passion are just nature's ploy to ensure the continuity of our species. Rather, where attraction is concerned, the subconscious mind plays a powerful role in drawing us to certain individuals that can create, or be manipulated into recreating, issues from our past. In this manner issues from our past can be recreated and brought into the present. Ideally, this gives us the opportunity to resolve these issues in order for us to become more whole psychologically and emotionally. This, of course, allows us the chance to become happier, healthier, and more productive in life. It also affords us the chance to have our lives be more rewarding and fulfilling. Through our interactions with others we get to learn far more about ourselves. This is how we come to heal ourselves of past trauma if we are aware of what's taking place in our relationships. It also grants us the opportunity to see things from another person's perspective. We must always keep in mind that we are half of the relationship. All too often we want to put all the blame for any problems on our partner. We need to claim our share of responsibility if we truly want to make a relationship work. Ideally, it's a 50/50 deal. When we look at astrology for compatibility, it is often misunderstood that only harmonious aspects between the charts in the comparison should be present. This is rarely, if ever, the case in my experience. Often we need to look at comparisons similarly to the way we look at the individual natal chart. When people have too many harmonious aspects in their birth chart, they can lack the energy, drive, and initiative to put their gifts to productive use. This same lack of drive may show itself where compatibility is concerned. Two people with nothing but harmonious aspects in their comparison may get along splendidly, have great conversations, and have a great deal of regard for one another . . . or they may not even notice each other! Even the best relationships tend to have some inharmonious aspects in their comparison, in my experience. This leads us to the inharmonious aspects that tend to crop up in compatibility readings. It is a misunderstanding to think that inharmonious aspects in comparisons doom a relationship right from the start. These inharmonious aspects might very well be what drew these individuals together in the first place. It seems that often it is the inharmonious aspects that light the spark of chemistry between the individuals in question. This is particularly true in romantic relationships - no spark, no chemistry! Of course, there are exceptions to every rule. My point here is to emphasize that we shouldn't panic over a few inharmonious aspects when we consider compatibility. They may be what drew the individuals together in the first place, or at least got them to notice one another. These aspects also afford us the opportunity to learn to cooperate and compromise, which is what all relationships boil down to if we want them to survive. Someone who is a spendthrift might easily learn to be more budget conscious if they are involved in a relationship with someone more frugal than they are. Of course, the frugal person might also learn that you can spend money once in awhile and have some fun if you keep spending within reasonable limits. After all, you can't take it with you and the government takes almost all of what you try to leave your loved ones! There are issues that can show up in compatibility charts that can be quite troubling indeed. For instance, a square aspect between one person's Sun and another person's Mars can indicate great tension. This stress can be so overwhelming as to affect the health of one or both individuals. Another example would be when Saturn squares Mars in a comparison. This is particularly true if the woman's Saturn squares the man's Mars. This has a troubling tendency to show up in a comparison where domestic violence is an issue. Another potential problem in comparisons could be difficulties where Mars and Pluto are concerned. Mars/Pluto inharmonious aspects in comparisons could indicate explosive arguments or possibly even violence. For women with a Mars/Pluto square in their birth chart, violence could also become an issue. Actually, this is something that either gender should be aware of. This is particularly true during certain transits that may activate the Mars/Pluto square. These are times to most definitely avoid anyone with an explosive temper or a tendency toward violence. Be sure to stay out of bad neighborhoods at these times and avoid unattended or poorly lighted parking lots. Problems at these times may be rare, but the consequences could last a lifetime! Other issues where love and astrology are concerned involve Venus and the Moon. Often people look only at Venus in the birth chart to determine whether or not they will have a happy romantic life. However, even when Venus is not particularly afflicted, problems may still show up in a person's love life through an afflicted Moon. The late astrologers Howard Sasportas and Richard Ideman discovered that some clients with troubled love lives often did not have a terribly afflicted Venus, but did show afflictions to the Moon in their charts. This isn't so unusual when you consider that the Moon is connected to our emotions and indicates what we tend to feel we need in order to feel comfortable in a given situation. Of course, there's far more to compatibility than listed here. And, obviously, considering only the Sun Signs isn't much help at all and can even be a bit misleading.
