Jupiter in the Houses

When Jupiter is placed in a house, the affairs of that house will be connected in some way with the house(s) containing the sign of Sagittarius as well as the house containing the ruling planet of the sign this planet is posited in. For example, placement in the sign of Aries would indicate a connection with the house it is posited in and the house containing Mars, planetary ruler of Aries. Similarly, since this planet is the traditional ruler of Pisces, we may see a secondary connection to the house(s) containing the sign of Pisces as well.

Jupiter does not necessarily mean good fortune will be bestowed upon us, but rather where we tend to expect our greatest rewards. This expectation, felt persistently and keenly enough, may very well bring positive results for our faith. This is generally construed as an area where we wish to be expansive and grasp for a greater life experience or attempt to give our lives some ultimate meaning or sense of purpose. The affairs and people of this house will indicate where and how we attempt to do this and will also show us where we may be most inclined to be generous. This is a positive expression for this planet and beneficial to the native as well when their good deeds are rewarded.

There should be a degree of caution kept in mind when examining the house Jupiter is posited in. This house symbolizes an area where we wish to grow and be able to explore. The trick, however, is in not over-extending ourselves because this may very well be an area where we can easily let our reach exceed our grasp. Usually, the problems associated with the affairs of this house are visited upon us because we went overboard or over-indulged in some way.

Related problems could come from so very many things that snare our interest we may have difficulty focusing our efforts in just one area. This condition tends to scatter the native's energy and may be responsible when waning interest undermines an undertaking because we are too anxious to be off and onto something else. Another possibility is that the rewards we expect here may not live up to our expectations; hence disillusionment. This is where we tend to look for our own personal truth and whatever that means to us individually. This is also where we can find hope and faith in the darkness that invades our lives from time to time.

FIRST HOUSE JUPITER

The Ascendant and first house are associated with our perspective on life and how others see us upon first meeting us. This house is connected with our attitudes and may also be descriptive of physical characteristics we possess. The first house is also indicative of the most natural path to finding our own personal identity/destiny.

When Jupiter is posited in the first house, the person usually has an optimistic outlook on life. These people are normally energetic and have an outgoing personality. They may exhibit high moral values, have a love of truth and be quite generous individuals. To others they may appear to be unusually lucky and tend to exhibit enthusiasm for life. Some may possess a happy-go-lucky nature. As to others, it may seem that opportunities come to them through little effort. They can carry themselves with dignity. This planet is the natural ruler of the ninth house, so some of these natives may exhibit interest in the fields of philosophy, religion, education, the law, publishing or any ninth-house activity they feel aids in the process of self-discovery.

Although placement in the first house bolsters the native's self-confidence, it could lead to problems as well. This planet has a propensity for going too far. It is this characteristic that may lead these people to overestimate their capabilities and promise goods they cannot deliver. In the first house, this could manifest as an individual that has an inflated sense of self-importance. Also, their love of truth, as they see it, is best tempered with a degree of tact for Jupiter can be brutally honest and do more harm than good with this truth.

The rush to new and better things could result in unfinished projects and a need for freedom at any cost. For some, this may mean simply fleeing any difficulties they are faced with. Jupiter tends to exaggerate or inflate and, in the first house of physical characteristics, this could manifest as a vulnerability to weight gain later in life.

For most, however, placement in the first house will tend to be very beneficial. The native does have to keep the tendency to go overboard in check. With this in mind, the native's optimism, confidence and warm demeanor toward others generally results in good fortune and a generous nature.

SECOND HOUSE JUPITER

The second house is associated with finances, movable assets, personal values, the desire nature and what constitutes inner security for the native. This also includes inner resources and innate talents.

Jupiter in the second house ordinarily means good fortune for a person's finances providing this position is not too seriously afflicted. They may be desirous and capable of securing a generous income. The natural exuberance of this planet may present pitfalls to some if they fail to exhibit a bit of caution, however. If they fail to do so, they may not only end up with little to show for money spent, but could also incur huge (Jupiter) debts in the process. Usually, however, this makes for beneficial business transactions and blessings in financial dealings if they do not fail to take too much for granted.

This could foster financial success in ninth house (Jupiter ruled) pursuits such as teaching, publishing or the import/export trade. The ninth also encompasses relatives of business and marriage partners, so this could indicate successful business dealings in partnership with in-laws. Travel to foreign countries could play a role such as travel agents. The sign it is posited in, along with the sign on the second-house cusp and the placement of the planetary ruler of this sign, will give further information along with all aspects concerned.

Jupiter does have a propensity for going too far at times; and, in the second house this could mean going to extremes where personal acquisition is concerned. Some of these individuals may feel that they never have enough or come to feel that they are what they accumulate and tie their sense of self-worth to their level of income. This could also be aligned with their feelings of what constitutes inner security for them and, as such, they may become obsessive about acquiring more. We have all heard of wealthy individuals that have lives that they feel are unrewarding; they have it all, yet it is not enough. In the second house of personal values, this could mean directing the attention inward to find what our inner values are and ultimately to find what it is to us that we perceive to have true value.

THIRD HOUSE JUPITER

The third house is associated with the immediate environment, short-distance journeys, commerce, early education, left-brain activity, communication, both verbal and written as well as communications media, siblings, neighbors and close kin other than the parents. The third house is representative of how a person tends to think. This includes our aptitude for learning and reasoning capabilities.

Jupiter in the third house could indicate a person that pursues self-discovery through expanding the mind. These people may have wide-ranging interests and, unless seriously afflicted, are usually liberal in their attitudes and are rarely considered narrow-minded. These people often possess expansive minds that wish to absorb as much knowledge as possible about whatever interests them. This is generally favorable if they can overcome the tendency to allow their mental focus to be distracted. If this is the case, knowledge may be broad but superficial and lacking in depth. Knowledge though, to most of these individuals, is important and they commonly pursue it with enthusiasm.

Unless seriously afflicted, all third-house issues will normally benefit from this placement. These people may possess excellent skills in communication, be it in teaching, writing or lecturing. Travel is associated with the third house as well as Jupiter's natural house, the ninth. This could manifest as a person that is well-traveled and communicates what they have learned to others. They could also view the entire world (ninth) as their classroom (third) and might travel to learn more about the world they live in or, on a more expansive level, foreign culture.

The down side of this placement could be a person that tends to think too much or a person so absorbed with learning more that they may never actually use what they learn. Wanderlust could keep them so perpetually on the move that it inhibits accomplishments when they cannot remain in one place long enough to see their efforts bear fruit. On the plus side, early education, relations with siblings and close kin and neighbors could be viewed as a great adventure and, whether through associating with others or expanding the mind, this person will usually find great benefits in third-house affairs.

FOURTH HOUSE JUPITER

The fourth house is associated with domestic affairs; what our home life was like in childhood and the home we would like to make for ourselves later in life. This house is also associated with how we end things, including the conditions we are likely to find at the end of our lives. This is one of the parent houses and usually is indicative of the parent in the background; the parent least influential in our development.

With Jupiter posited in the fourth house, we will ordinarily find that the home of our childhood was beneficial to us. Finances were probably not much of a concern and relations within the family were probably viewed as kind and generous. There may be indications of a strong religious or moral overtone in the household or possibly the home itself, like Jupiter, was large and expansive.

This could indicate that travel may have been a significant factor in childhood, perhaps indicating living in foreign countries due to this parent's work. This is also indicative of a person that was probably given much room to grow in childhood and found their parents, especially the fourth-house parent, quite generous. This is a strong placement for Jupiter, as the fourth house is related to Cancer, the sign of exaltation for this planet; thus, fourth Jupiter is accidentally exalted.

The family circle may have been large and this is possible with the family the native has later in life. The home itself may be large or set in wide open spaces or possibly within a foreign country. Finances, later in life, should be quite comfortable. This could be indicative of a home that values religion, morals, ethics and higher education. This could also mean coming from a prominent family and raising one as well.

The parent in question was probably viewed as enthusiastic about life or carried strong convictions in religious and ethical behavior. If this position is afflicted, it could symbolize a parent that could not keep still. This parent could have been involved in Foreign Service through military or diplomatic service or possibly religious missionary work. Unless seriously afflicted, this usually means that the child/parent relationship was beneficial to both.

FIFTH HOUSE JUPITER

The fifth house is associated with artistic/creative self-expression, financial speculation, romantic affairs, children, both ours and others, hobbies and leisure activities. The fifth house is descriptive of how we like to play.

With Jupiter in the fifth house, there is the likelihood of many and varied creative interests. This position could manifest within a person as a deep need not only to express themselves creatively, but possibly to give their life meaning through creative expression. They may feel as though this is what gives their life its ultimate purpose. Creativity could cover a wide range of interests instead of just one artistic medium. The drawback might be that the native spreads himself over such a vast area that no one form of creative self-expression is ever really mastered.

This position gives a tendency to male offspring; especially the first-born. Their families may contain many children as well due to Jupiter's penchant to enlarge things and the likelihood that this could play itself out in the size of their families. This is usually an indication of favorable relationships with children and could therefore indicate a profession in teaching. They will normally be beneficial and generous to children and the native is likely to benefit from this association as well.

Placement in the fifth house is often an indication of a happy romantic life. Romantic partners could be financially well-off and possess a degree of status in society. This could, if afflicted, indicate a person whose motives are mercenary where romance is concerned and then romantic partners are chosen for their likelihood to benefit the native.

With financial speculation, this can be a favorable position but the native, as always with Jupiter, should be forewarned about going too far and overextending themselves which could presage financial ruin.

SIXTH HOUSE JUPITER

The sixth house is referred to as the house of health and work and service to others. Here we will find indications about our attitude toward work and service as well as our attitude toward maintaining our health. The sixth house gives clues to our relationships with co-workers, employers and employees and the work environment. This gives indications of the type of work we may lean toward performing as well as giving indications to the health problems we may be prone to and possibly the types of conditions that may presage the onset of illness.

Jupiter in the sixth house is usually beneficial to the native's health. If problems do arise, it is frequently from overindulgence of some type or possibly overextending the physical reserves as in overwork. Employment should not be a problem for these people and, for most, they can at least count on adequate compensation; however, aspects will give further clues about this. These people could be rovers where work is concerned and that could mean that they may change jobs often or possibly travel for a living. This is ordinarily beneficial to those involved in service work of some sort or work that gives the native plenty of room to move around in; be this wide open spaces or calling their own shots.

This is one of the placements that are considered highly beneficial to those working in the healing professions. The warmth and generosity associated with Jupiter can prove very beneficial to those needing the assistance of the native and this in turn usually translates into financial rewards for the native's efforts. This can lead as well to the native having an understanding of the mind/body connection and how a person's emotional state can affect the individual's health.

These individuals usually have a lot of energy to put into their work and are people that pride themselves on doing a good job. They should be warned to get adequate rest and to watch their dietary habits.

SEVENTH HOUSE JUPITER

The seventh is referred to as the marriage house, although this includes committed relationships not necessarily formalized. Here we find public relations, the lower courts, business partnerships and, oddly enough, this is also referred to as the house of open enemies. This latter is a reference to characteristics we have trouble owning in ourselves but may freely project onto others.

When Jupiter is found in the seventh house, we should look to the sign on the house cusp, and the sign that it is posited in particularly, to give us indications of the type of relationships that it seeks here. Although it can be quite generous and beneficial to partnerships, the sign placement will indicate if the individual feels too hemmed in by singular commitments. That is to say, depending on the sign placement, this person could very well have a roving eye and want many relationships to many people. Aspects will indicate how successful the native is in achieving and maintaining their ideals in partnerships. This does not preclude fidelity to a mate, but is usually indicative of a gregarious personality. Obviously, this can cause problems if this planet's tendency to go too far should surface.

If this position is well aspected, it is normally an indication of someone that is quite generous to their mate. Finances, through marriage and partnerships, could be quite beneficial. This is an indication of a native that has public relations skills and a strong sense of ethics. This can be an indication of a fortunate and happy marriage where the ethical standards and philosophy of life of the partners mesh very well. This could also be beneficial to lawyers as the seventh house is associated with the lower courts.

If this position is afflicted, however, all of the above could be cause for problems for the native. This could be due to the fact that this planet dislikes boundaries and troubles will probably come from a tendency to go too far and let one's reach exceed one's grasp.

EIGHTH HOUSE JUPITER

The eighth house is one of the natural water houses and as such is associated with the unconscious. This house deals with sex and quite often it is in this emotionally and hormonally-charged realm that what lies here is brought to the surface; sometimes explosively. This house also deals with death, taxes, inheritance, the occult, alimony and partnership resources. More importantly, in my opinion, this is the house of transformation and will indicate how we deal and fare with these transformations quite often brought about by how we deal with what is hiding in the unconscious, for good or ill.

Jupiter positioned in the eighth house is often beneficial to jointly-held assets or finances not completely under the native's control. It could be this, however, that could be a source of problems here, for this planet finds restrictions loathsome and will probably want to run the show. Sign placement will indicate how Jupiter is most inclined to go about attempting this while aspects will indicate the degree of difficulty or ease the native encounters in these pursuits.

Sexually we may see two distinct types with this placement. These people can be generous and warm lovers, finding a great deal of fulfillment within the bonds of a monogamous relationship. They could find sex highly rewarding both for themselves and their partners. Jupiter has a tendency to never get enough until they overdose, and this could mean an expansive appetite for sensual delights, which should not pose too big a problem if their mate is similarly inclined. However, it could be this very appetite that is the source of inconstancy for the native and lead to their refusal to commit to just one partner. Jupiter is also indicative of where we expect too much and this could indicate a person that is continually searching for bigger and better experiences rather than concentrating on quality; assuring their own continual disappointment.

The approach to death is usually philosophical (ninth) and taken in stride. Causes of death are usually classified as natural.

NINTH HOUSE JUPITER

The ninth house is associated with higher education, religion, the law and higher courts, ethics, philosophy, publishing and relations with relatives of marriage and business partners. Here we find intuitive and abstract thought through the association with right-brain activity. This is the house of foreign cultures and long-distance journeys.

Jupiter in the ninth house is considered accidentally dignified as this is its natural house of rulership. Therefore, as when any planet is placed in its natural house, this is considered a strong placement. Planets in their natural house function more readily there. This can give a person very strong moral and ethical convictions and most are open-minded and want to, at least mentally, take in all there is to view. One danger for some, however, could be fanaticism where their viewpoints are concerned. This could, if seriously afflicted, lead to shallow learning from jumping from one subject to another. If favorably aspected, this could be a good placement for teachers, lecturers or clergymen.

With this planet's propensity for wide-open spaces in the ninth house of long-distance travel this could be an indication of someone that loves travel, particularly foreign travel and cultures. They could be among those that view the entire world as their classroom and write about their travels. On a more mundane level, this could be beneficial to travel agents and those involved in the import/export trade. This could also be beneficial for the diplomatic corps as Jupiter's benevolence could be showered upon the people of a foreign culture and vice versa. This can also tend toward benefits for both partners where the relationships with relatives of business and marriage partners are concerned. Publishing could also prove to be financially rewarding.

Some of the problems of this position could be the fanaticism of attitude previously mentioned as well as a know-it-all stance that these natives could subscribe to. Some of these individuals prefer to deal with problems by resorting to "travel"; that is to say, by running away.

TENTH HOUSE JUPITER

The tenth house is associated with career ambitions and professional achievements. Here we will find indications about career leanings and how we wish to be seen in the public eye. Conditions surrounding the tenth house will indicate the ease or difficulty we find in bringing these pursuits to fruition. The tenth is also one of the parent houses and usually indicates, for good or ill, the parent that had the most influence on the native's development.

When Jupiter is found in the tenth house, we will usually find this indicates a person of vast ambition with rather high goals. Aspects will give indications to the degree of success the individual is likely to find in tenth-house pursuits. Its influence is often beneficial so long as we keep the tendency to go too far in check. This could also bring Jupiter careers to the fore; and these people may be clergymen, lawyers or involved in higher education. This could also mean careers in publishing or the import/export trade.

This is commonly indicative of an individual that can achieve high-standing in their careers as well as in the public eye. They are usually seen as generous, kind-hearted and reliable. These people are ordinarily concerned about their reputations and, along with this planet's love of honesty, this keeps most of these individuals on the straight-and-narrow. This position is also considered favorable for public office as the tenth is associated with politics. These people are said to carry themselves with dignity, particularly later in life.

Aspects to Jupiter in the tenth house, along with sign placement and aspects to the house ruler, will give information about how the native perceived the relationship with the parent in question. For some, this could mean seeing this parent as generous, warm and benevolent. For others, this could mean a parent that was a wanderer and traveled a good deal. This could mean a prominent parentage and leave the native with a vast ambition merely to prove their worth to their parents.

ELEVENTH HOUSE JUPITER

The eleventh house is associated with group associations, professional organizations, clubs, friendships and hopes, wishes, goals and objectives.

When Jupiter is placed in the eleventh house, it is ordinarily an indication that friendships and group associations will be beneficial to the native in some way. Perhaps their friends are capable and willing to help them reach their goals. Some of these people will be interested in religious groups (ninth ruled by Jupiter) or possibly be drawn to groups with humanitarian ideals (eleventh ruled by Aquarius). These people may also be philanthropists of sorts or attracted to such groups. These natives are usually popular due to their generosity; and this in return draws others to them that are willing to help them achieve their goals.

The eleventh house is associated with socializing, and when this planet is found here it is normally an indication that social interaction is necessary for the native's growth. These people may have an uplifting effect on friends and groups, but it may be that these interactions give meaning to the native's life as well. This could be an indication of an ever-expanding number of friends and acquaintances that will help the native's view of the world grow. If taken too far, this could be an indication of the "social butterfly" that is always attending parties or social affairs. When Jupiter goes too far in this manner, the energy is often scattered and this in turn hinders accomplishment of their goals.

These people have a good deal to offer in friendships and associations. Sign placement and aspects will give more information about the ease or difficulty of eleventh-house affairs. Some with this position may expect too much too soon where group ideals are concerned. That is to say, these people may prove impatient where achieving group goals are concerned or possibly friendships are sought for personal gain, and later these gains are short of what the native expected.

TWELFTH HOUSE JUPITER

The twelfth house is associated with confinement as in prisons, asylums, hospitals and those that work or are interred there. This is also the house of libraries and museums and those employed by these institutions. The twelfth house is also considered the house of secret enemies and of things hidden. I take this to mean characteristics and qualities we tend to have difficulty expressing, and so these things remain hidden from us. These things remain in our unconscious, which is another aspect of the twelfth as this is one of the natural water houses.

Jupiter placed in the twelfth house is generally considered to be beneficial to those that work in the helping professions. Sometimes, the twelfth house is said to be symbolic of those individuals that have reached the end of their tether. When people are in this state, they may have a breakdown and end up in a hospital or possibly commit a crime and be incarcerated in a prison. Placement in the twelfth house could be beneficial to those that need the native's assistance in the above, or similar, circumstances.

On a more mundane level, some of these individuals may feel as though they have a guardian angel as a benefactor. When things seem most bleak for the native something intervenes to protect them. This may be nothing more than hope and faith that things will sort themselves out, but this often results in their optimism paying off. Some people with this position can have schemes played against them by secret enemies that have the vexing experience of having their plans backfire on them while the native goes unscathed or actually profits from their enemies' machinations.

This placement could show up in the charts of people that find solitude refreshing and are at their most optimistic when alone. This can also be an expansive benefit for the imagination and an aid to creativity. When these natives are faced with troubled times they should be warned against reckless behavior that could lead to injury or a tendency to escape through over-indulgence of alcohol, drugs, or both.
