Mars in Astrology
Mars is planetary ruler of Aries and, therefore, the natural ruler of the first house. This planet is also the co-ruler of Scorpio and the eighth house, so there may be a secondary connection here as well. There will be a connection in some way between this house placement and the houses containing the signs Aries and Scorpio. If this planet is posited in a sign other than Aries, there will also be a connection with the house containing the planetary ruler of the sign this planet is placed in. This is a masculine force and is considered to be an energizer. Whatever this planet touches by placement and aspect it tends to energize or activate. The house position will indicate the area of life where we will use this energy most instinctively. It is this department of life where this energy will express itself most naturally before it goes on to exert itself in goals and objectives in other areas of our lives. This planet is sometimes considered a problem child of the zodiac and, just as some children are prone to do, its battle cry can be – “Me first!” But like anything else in astrology, it has a negative and a positive expression, and this means what we need is balance. This planet is the force that enables us to achieve. With this energy, we can learn new skills, achieve independence and be assertive when we need to stand up for our rights. If this is taken too far it can easily become aggression, belligerence, too much competitiveness or, in extreme cases, possibly violence. This is the nasty side of this energy when its expression goes beyond healthy self-assertiveness and acquires amnesia where the rights of others are concerned. Sexual energy as well is indicated by this planet and can suffer the same problems of duality. The house position is the primary focus of this sometimes over-abundance of energy and it is dealing with these house issues that we will find this energy most readily observable. Another factor to keep in mind when dealing with this planet is anger or inner-directed anger. Depression is believed to be an indication of bottled-up or inner-directed anger and, in extreme cases, may be life-threatening. An antidote could be using this energy positively as well as learning to express anger in a healthy manner. Physical exercise is always a good antidote for this planet's frustration. MARS IN THE SIGNS Mars is an energizer which stimulates activity and spurs a person into taking action. It is closely aligned with the masculine desire principle initiating sexual activity. If this energy is used positively, it manifests as self-assertion, initiative, and ambition. If this principle is expressed negatively, it will tend to manifest as aggression, impulsiveness, impatience, recklessness, anger, combativeness and possibly violence. Even when expressed on a positive level, Mars could indicate how danger and violence may enter into our lives. This planet is a powerful influence; and, when used positively, can help us to accomplish much, but it is a self-centered principle desirous of immediate gratification. So problems may arise if we do not endeavor to use this energy wisely. For men, we are likely to see this principle closely aligned with expression of the male ego. For women, this could be an indication of the masculine principles she finds attractive in a mate. For both, this will indicate how we express Mars’ energy and also exactly what is likely to stimulate this energy within us. The sign placement will indicate what stimulates us and how we are inclined to express this energy and color the expression of these characteristics.
