Moon in the Houses

MOON HOUSE: CANCER CONNECTION

The Moon rules the sign of Cancer and together they are the natural rulers of the fourth house. The house placement will be associated with the house containing the sign of Cancer and/or where Cancer is found on the house cusp. There will also be a connection with the house containing the planetary ruler of the sign the Lesser Luminary is posited in. For instance, if you have this planet in Gemini the house containing Mercury, planetary ruler of Gemini, will be connected to this house as will the Cancer house.

Some students of astrology refer to this planet as being representative of our "inner child". This is because the Lesser Luminary is associated with early childhood, quite probably because in early childhood we usually have more close contact with the mother or other female nurturer. Older astrology texts associate the fourth house, ruled by this planet and Cancer, with the mother; hence the Moon and inner-child connection. On a broader level, this means that this planet is associated with habitual patterns that become somewhat unconscious to the individual, but are quite easily discernable to others. These reaction patterns go so far back into our childhood we no longer notice them even when others can plainly see them.

Since this planet represents the mother and women in general, it is quite probable that in the house placement, and where Cancer is found in the chart, women may play an important role in these areas of our lives. Also, this is indicative of areas where we may seek out nurturing or attempt to be nurturing ourselves. This planet is natural ruler of the fourth house and is associated with "home", so the activities of this house may be where we attempt to find comfort and security when we feel a need to pause and recharge ourselves. The Moon, being changeable, may also denote fluctuating conditions as well as fluctuating moods.

FIRST HOUSE MOON

Placements in the first house are usually brought to the foreground of the individual's personality. If not, there will ordinarily be aspects denoting why there is a repression of these qualities within the individual. However, with the Lesser Luminary in the first house we can normally look for lunar qualities to stand out in the person in question.

With a first house placement, the native is inclined to have a strong connection with the mother, and this connection may be a powerful influence throughout the person's entire life. This connection is so strong due to the first house connection to our personal identity and how we may go about achieving this. This planet rules Cancer, a water sign, and this might lead us to suspect that this individual will have a strong intuitive sense and be sensitive, sometimes overly so, to the people and atmosphere around them. On the plus side, this can mean a person that is nurturing and sympathetic. On the negative side, it might make for a person who is too easily influenced by the opinions of others or dependent upon others for a sense of security, which ideally should come from within.

This planet is associated with the emotions; and since it is changeable, this can make for moodiness. This can make for a person whose identity and actions are strongly affected by their emotions or a mood they happen to be experiencing. This placement may give a need for recognition and this may be tied into the need most children feel to be acceptable to their mother. Later in life, this same impulse may drive an adult, although their survival is now in their own hands. This is the powerful habitual influence the Moon represents at work.

These people can have a child-like quality in their approach to life and coupled with their sensitivity and nurturing qualities, tend to draw people to them. They should remember that we all have needs, for some are prone to put their needs above all else. Should this be the case, look to the aspects to the Moon in this position.

SECOND HOUSE MOON

When the Lesser Luminary is posited in the second house, it is said to be indicative of fluctuations in the person's financial resources periodically throughout the person's life. This mirrors the changing nature of this planet, theoretically, and will be mitigated by the sign it is placed in as well as aspects to it.

The emotions and the "inner-child" are associated with this planet as well. This could mean that a person’s emotional well-being and emotional fluctuations will be mirrored by the person's finances. This is particularly true here because of the association with security ascribed to the second house. Therefore, financial and emotional security may go hand-in-hand for a second-house Moon. The Lesser Luminary is associated with "Cancer the Crab" and may be just as tenacious when holding onto their assets.

Adaptability is associated to the changing quality of this planet, and the association of water through the sign of Cancer can bestow an intuitive quality. These traits may be quite beneficial with a second-house placement. For instance, these intuitive qualities may give this person insight into what the public may want to buy in the future and therefore be among the first to offer it.

For a second-house placement, it would be beneficial to remember that the Moon affects the tides. These tides might be financial as well as emotional. We should, however, remember that we are not our possessions and the amount of money we have in the bank is not an indication of our worth as human beings. Remembering this should give us some fortitude through tough times. These tough times, however, may be little more than our perceptions at the moment due to a mood swing. For instance, is the glass half-empty or half-full or merely a half-glass of water?

This may favor food service, domestic services and nurturing, such as child care. The Lesser Luminary has also been associated with careers in writing, but other creative endeavors may be possible sources of income as well. Whatever the case, these people will usually want to keep a nest-egg in reserve for times when finances are tight. This will act as an aid to their emotional security.

THIRD HOUSE MOON

The Moon is planetary ruler of Cancer, a water sign, and so when linked to the third house this water house symbolism of creativity and third-house relation to the mind is said to be indicative of a creative and imaginative mind. The only drawback might be a tendency for too much daydreaming. The Moon, being changeable and the third house indicating immediate environment, may give a third-house placement a restless nature or one that becomes easily bored or distracted.

One key point to remember where this planet is concerned is the relationship to the emotions. Along with the psychic tie through the element of water, this can make for a person that can feel or pick up on the "vibes" in the atmosphere. With a third-house placement, this can make for a person who is quite positive in a friendly atmosphere, but might easily be brought down in a negative one. Obviously, this is true of all of us to an extent, but a third-house Moon should be aware of this tendency. This can also work on another level. The environment, symbolized by the third house, will tend to be interpreted positively if this person is in a positive mood and negatively if they are in a negative mood. As mentioned above, the key here may be the emotions. No one should ever make decisions when they are emotionally upset, and this is important for a third-house Moon to keep in mind, for they are very prone to having their judgment affected by their emotions.

The Lesser Luminary is related to our "inner-child" and how we tend to attempt to find security by habitually pursuing the things indicated by sign and house placement. With the third house related to early education, this could make for a person that finds security in knowledge. This might also mean security (Moon) through the ability to communicate (third) clearly, and so forth. This is another position of the Moon that could be beneficial to writers or to those that dabble in writing.

FOURTH HOUSE MOON

When this planet is posited in the fourth house, it is considered to be a strong placement and referred to as accidentally dignified. This is due to the natural rulership of the Lesser Luminary over the sign of Cancer and the fourth house. This is usually indicative of a person that has strong emotional bonds (Moon) with their home and family (fourth). These people usually gain a sense of emotional security from harmonious relationships with their families. If these familial relationships are strained, a sense of insecurity might set in, and there will probably be a noticeable change in the person's emotional outlook.

One of the parent houses, the fourth is traditionally taken to symbolize the mother. When posited here, one would think this, for all intents and purposes, would confirm this. However, we should not be too hasty about assigning the fourth to the mother. Depending upon the sign on the cusp; other planetary placements found here; aspects and house rulers; the fourth might still indicate the relationship with the father. Though in all likelihood rare, it could be interpreted that the native found the father more nurturing than the mother, so that this placement may indicate a father that expressed the more maternal characteristics usually attributed to the mother.

Where we take the fourth to be home and the domestic scene, we will find a fourth-house Moon naturally desirous of harmonious conditions. It is, however, the nature of this planet to be moody and changeable. Where the home is concerned, this could mean many changes in residence throughout the individual's life and, depending on the aspects involved, we may find indications of whether or not the individual found the changes desirable or not. With the Moon being closely aligned with security, it is doubtful that many people with a fourth-house Moon would enjoy domestic instability, but aspects will indicate how well the native would adjust if there was much moving about in life.

FIFTH HOUSE MOON

When the Moon is posited in the fifth house, we can expect to see its influence strong in the area of artistic/creative self-expression for a number of reasons. The Moon is symbolic of our "inner-child" and habitual patterns, usually unconscious, that were formed in our childhood. The fifth house is connected to this by symbolizing how our inner-child likes to play. This planet is connected to our emotions and to the unconscious through its rulership of the water sign, Cancer. For all these reasons, a person with a fifth-house Moon will probably have a great deal of emotional involvement with their attempts at creative self-expression.

This could mean that their creativity springs from the depths of their emotions or that in some way creativity lets them tap their unconscious for creative ideas. This might further be expressed as a person that turns to creativity as a refuge when they are feeling insecure. In all probability, a fifth-house Moon would quite likely find creativity to be soothing if not therapeutic. It should also be mentioned here that some astrologers have found that the Moon often figures prominently in the charts of writers, so this may be a viable outlet for these people.

The Moon also symbolizes the mother and when in the fifth house we might find a person that has natural maternal/nurturing abilities where children are concerned. These people are usually desirous of having children and this position lends a hand by bestowing fertility. This may be an indication of a predisposition for female offspring. Where the mother is concerned, we might look to see if issues with the native's mother are rearing their heads again in our own interactions with our children.

With romantic relationships, this planet would usually indicate a strong emotional influence where romantic partners are concerned. The native should, however, be very conscious in their choice of partners or the "mother issues" mentioned above could just as easily be played out with romantic partners. Also, it should be kept in mind the fluctuating nature of this planet, as this could wreak havoc where a person is looking for stability. This could come from the native or the partner. For these same reasons, unless stabilizing factors are shown, the native should be careful where finances and speculation are concerned.

SIXTH HOUSE MOON

When the Moon is posited in the sixth house, it will exert its influence on health and work and service to others. Where health is concerned, due to this planet's relationship to the mother, hereditary factors should be given attention where illness/disease is concerned. Any conditions connected to the maternal bloodline might indicate a similar predisposition in the native. The Lesser Luminary is also connected to emotions, and this could be a person that is particularly vulnerable to illness when emotionally upset. This will probably be noticeable in most people, but with a sixth-house placement it is usually even more apparent. For instance, a heavily afflicted Moon here is said to predispose some to being hypochondriacs. This, of course, is rather severe but it should give an idea of just how predisposed a sixth-house placement might be to illness when the emotions come into play.

On the plus side, a person with a sixth-house Moon can be keenly in tune with their body if they learn how to listen to it. The Moon rules Cancer, a water sign, and can give a good deal of intuition. If a sixth-house Moon has a backache every time a certain person comes to visit, for instance, it should be an indication to deal with the problem in a more forthright manner.

Where work is concerned, these people might have their productivity strongly affected by their moods. They would probably do best when working with others rather than alone. Unemployment for these individuals may be terribly stressful, as they may need steady employment in order to feel secure. Due to the changeable nature of this planet, however, they may change jobs rather frequently or employment conditions might not be stable. They are said to be often found in professions related to the Moon such as food service or real estate. In order to express maternal/nurturing qualities, they might also work in the health care profession or with children; expressing their sixth-house Moon's mothering instincts in this manner. This is also another position of the Moon that could indicate employment as a writer or in other creative fields.

SEVENTH HOUSE MOON

With the Moon in the seventh house, we find an indication of powerful emotional involvement where relationships are concerned. These people may feel a deep need to be involved in a committed relationship in order to feel secure and their emotional well-being may be dependent upon how successful they are at establishing and maintaining relationships. Aspects to this placement and planetary house ruler(s) should be considered in order to find out what degree of difficulty the person will encounter in the pursuit of such relationship.

Since this planet is symbolic of the mother, people with a seventh-house placement are often viewed as seeking a mother or parental figure for a marriage partner. This may be true to an extent, and the native should be made aware of this, as if they are not, it is quite possible that issues with regard to the parents may resurface in a marriage/partnership. If the native is aware of this, however, they can question themselves about what is the attraction in regard to a particular person. Actually, this is good advice for any seventh-house placement as here we may find ourselves searching for someone to live out certain characteristics for us, which we would be better off trying to consciously develop and live out for ourselves.

Whether or nor parental issues enter into the realm of relationships, it will be almost a certainty that these people will want the security found in a home or family as domesticity falls under the realm of this planet. On the plus side, these individuals are usually noted for their ability to adapt to a partner's needs and in this way be very giving people. A word of caution, however, might be that they should be careful not to lose their individuality in the process of trying to meet the needs of their partner. We all have the right to expect our needs to be met as well. This is the give and take involved in relationships and the seventh house as well.

EIGHTH HOUSE MOON

Since the eighth house is naturally ruled by Pluto and a keyword for Pluto is intensity, if we find the Moon here and relate it to the emotions, we might expect to find this person to have rather intense emotional reactions. The eighth is a natural water house. This planet rules the water sign of Cancer, and since water is related to intuition, we may also find this person to have a good degree of psychic sensitivity.

The eighth house is related to the unconscious and the Lesser Luminary shares this relationship through the element of water by symbolizing unconscious habitual reaction patterns stemming from childhood. Since the Lesser Luminary also represents the mother and the eighth represents unconscious material stemming from childhood, we might expect to find parental issues playing an important role in eighth-house matters, particularly where the mother is concerned. This need not be negative, although eighth-house issues often are, but rather may give us clues as to how these reaction patterns might more easily be resolved.

Sex and death are eighth-house issues, and with the Moon taken to represent childhood we may find that these issues may have had a powerful impact on this person in childhood. This could also mean that this person might seek security (Moon) in sex (eighth). If this remains unconscious, it could lead to a whole host of troubles for the individual, least of which could be disillusionment.

On the lighter side, we may find this individual very adaptive (Moon) to the needs of their partner sexually and emotionally. Also, their psychic attunement could help them to forecast coming business trends to profitable conclusion. They may also be able to nurture (Moon) others struggling with problems of self-worth which are attributable to troubles from the unconscious that may stem from childhood, symbolic of the eighth house.

NINTH HOUSE MOON

This planet is related to childhood and the ninth is related to religious concepts and ethical values. Therefore, we might expect a person with a ninth-house placement to cling (Cancer the Crab, ruled by the Moon) to the values and religion imbued in childhood. These people may naturally look for emotional security (Moon) in their belief system.

This planet is related to the element of water (intuitive/imaginative) and the ninth is related to abstract thought (right-brain activity). This then can give a ninth-house Moon quite a bit of psychic sensitivity. Depending on aspects to the Moon, we might get an indication of what a person does with this tendency. Do they daydream or are they actively creative? The Lesser Luminary is related to motherhood and a ninth-house Moon might teach as a way of expressing the nurturing qualities of this planet. The ninth is also related to publishing, so this could be expressed through writing or perhaps working in the legal system to protect the rights of others.

The ninth house is also associated with long journeys and foreign cultures; while this planet is related to domesticity (naturally rules the fourth). This could manifest as a person that sets up residence in a foreign country. Due to the changeability of this planet, however, this could be a person afflicted with wanderlust and who habitually has a need to change their residence often. This characteristic could have a negative side that might be expressed by a person that habitually (Moon) runs away (ninth/long journeys) from their problems. Look to sign placement and aspects to determine the most likely expression.

In-laws are encompassed in the ninth house. Since the Moon is related to the feminine, this could be an indication that female in-laws might have a strong influence on the individual. With this placement in the ninth house, it is usually an indication that in-laws are quite readily treated as the immediate family.

TENTH HOUSE MOON

When we find the Moon posited in the tenth house, we may take this to mean that the mother is represented by the tenth house. This is probably the case, in all likelihood, but we should keep in mind that there is the possibility that the tenth house may, in fact, represent the father and the native found the father to be the more nurturing (Moon) parent. This is just one more example of why we should not isolate a single factor in a chart. Always consider the entire chart and check with the person by asking questions.

With the Lesser Luminary in the tenth house, we often find an individual that finds emotional security (Moon) through their status and reputation in the public eye. This is probably why some of these people pursue politics as a profession and may do rather well in this public arena if the aspects to this planet are favorable. One problem with this placement might be an acute sensitivity to any slurs or slander concerning the native's reputation.

As mentioned earlier, there is the likelihood that the mother was the more influential parent in the native's development. When we look at the tenth house in this light, we may find a person who is driven to achieve prominence in the public eye in order to win Mother's approval/love. This may very well be on an unconscious level, but be extraordinarily powerful nonetheless. As children, we are dependent upon the approval of our mothers to keep us alive. The psychic power of this issue may manifest as a person that is driven to achieve almost as if their very survival was dependent on it. This need not be anything quite so drastic; however, it might merely mean that the native chose a profession that the mother pursued or would have liked to if she had given herself the opportunity to do so.

Either way, with this placement in the tenth house, the family and females in general will probably be influential where the career is concerned. Another possibility could be that this individual might express their nurturing (Moon) qualities through their profession such as a caregiver. This planet also influences food services, hotels, writing/creativity, and may give insight into what the public wants.

ELEVENTH HOUSE MOON

With the Moon in the eleventh house, we might find a person that seeks emotional security in friendships or group associations. Women friends are usually more numerous or may hold greater influence where eleventh-house matters are concerned. If this position is afflicted, there could be the possibility of the native living out conflicts with the mother in eleventh-house matters. This could, however, merely be that the native has a maternal gift with friends or could find a "second mother" in one of their female friends. Some of these individuals may make their home (Moon) available for group meetings or functions. The group they include themselves with may be in some way oriented toward family or domestic interests or possibly real estate.

These people should choose their friends and associates with care as the Moon can be quite impressionable. This could have adverse consequences if this person should be too dependent on the approval of others. On the plus side, this position usually confers an ease and adaptability to group settings and varied interests. The changeability of this planet could also make for a person that moves from group to group as their moods change or to belonging to many groups simultaneously. Sign placements and aspects will give further indications in this regard.

The eleventh house is connected to friendship, and the Moon represents domesticity, so this individual may adopt their friends as family. When we take this inclination farther, we find the eleventh house representative of the group consciousness or the collective. This may manifest as a person that pursues social reform for all of humanity. This would reflect the maternal nurturing symbolic of the Moon and could also indicate a person that has a strong emotional commitment to these issues they wish to see changed for what they perceive to be the good of all concerned.

TWELFTH HOUSE MOON

With the Moon posited in the twelfth house, we may find an individual that has difficulty expressing their emotions. This could in turn be expressed as shyness or introversion, leaving this person feeling lonely on a very deep level. If there is an indication of emotional problems, this probably stems from early childhood family conditions and the relationship with the mother (Moon) is obviously suspect.

This planet rules a water sign (Cancer) and the twelfth is one of the natural water houses ruled by Neptune/Jupiter and Pisces. This would indicate a person that is probably imaginative and may bestow psychic gifts. The double-edged sword here is that these individuals may be so adept at picking up on feelings in the atmosphere they may not be able to differentiate between their own feelings and the feelings of others. This could leave these people thin-skinned with feelings that are easily hurt. It can, however, bestow the positive gifts of empathy and the ability to nurture those that are in need. The task here is to keep from being overwhelmed by what is picked up in the environment and at the same time allow themselves to be open to these gifts of the feeling nature.

When we consider the collective qualities of the twelfth house, we might find this individual very open to a family inheritance and particularly anything emanating from the mother. A twelfth-house Moon is said to have a strong psychic bond with the mother. Although this is probably true in most cases, in some it might mean a separation from her at an early age as well.

The gifts bestowed by a twelfth-house placement might run along the lines of a deep ability to empathize or sympathize with those broken souls who find themselves in need of twelfth-house nurturing. The twelfth house is said to hide our inner assets, but these may be our most precious gifts to offer humanity. A twelfth-house position may give us the ability to know just what is needed at the appropriate time. This is also one of the placements of this planet that has shown up in the charts of prominent musicians and writers.
