Moon in the Signs

The Moon is associated with emotions, the unconscious, and habitual, instinctive, reflexive responses to people and experiences. It symbolizes attitudes fostered in childhood and the relationship with the mother and women in general. It may indicate how the native perceives the mother as well.

For a man the Moon (along with Venus) may indicate the qualities he is looking for in a woman; for a female it may reflect her attitude toward her maternal and nurturing instincts and her femininity. For both genders, it may have a bearing on self-image.

The sign the Moon is posited in will color the native's attitude and responses to all of the above. The Moon also holds a connection to the domestic scene and may be associated with our love life as well.

ARIES MOON

This could indicate fiery emotions and the native may be noted for a quick temper, though anger is usually short-lived. Reactions may be impulsive and sometimes reckless without forethought, which may lead to trouble. Headstrong and head-first attitudes are combined here with an independent nature. These natives need to develop patience, as impetuous behavior may lead to mishaps or accidents, not to mention alienating others.

The mother was probably seen by the native as pushy and the relationship was probably combative and possibly competitive on some level. Home life is normally quite active due to the influence of Mars' rulership of Aries.

TAURUS MOON

This placement helps to stabilize the emotions and thus, the native's reactions and responses to people and experiences. In fact, stability is of major importance to Moon in Taurus individuals for emotional security. Domestic (Moon) and financial (Venus) interests are very important for these people and they will work hard to maintain this security for themselves and their family.

These people are generally very affectionate with loved ones, for Taurus is a sensual sign, but they may be a bit possessive. The biggest source of problems for this position of the Moon may be their possessiveness and a drive for financial security, which may interfere with emotional interaction. However, they usually do well in life and may have a fondness for good food as well as material security. One caution should be to avoid resting on one's laurels as Taurus, ruled by Venus, can tend to laziness.

The mother is usually perceived by the native to be a caring and dependable woman. The Moon is considered to be exalted in Taurus.

GEMINI MOON

The influence of Gemini on the Moon could make for a good deal of restlessness due to the influence of Mercury, Gemini's ruler. There can be insatiable curiosity and excessive talkativeness to the point of annoying some people. The emotions may be very changeable or, in some cases, superficial. It is said that these people have a need to verbalize their emotions almost as if to understand what it is exactly that they are feeling. If taken too far, this tendency may add to the confusion so that the native becomes unsure of what they actually feel.

This can, however, make for people that can adapt quickly to changing circumstances, which can aid them in finding solutions to problems they are faced with. Like all mutable signs, however, they would be wise to develop persistence. This could indicate many changes of residence, particularly in childhood. The adult home life may be geared to the mental or intellectual plane and/or outside influences may be more important than home life.

The mother may be perceived more as a sister (Mercury ruling third house of siblings) or possibly very changeable, flighty and unreliable.

CANCER MOON

These people are often noted for deep emotions and strong emotional ties to their families. These individuals are usually very nurturing and caring people. This is partly due to the fact that they wish to be approved of and loved. These natives are very sensitive; and when hurt, normally tend to withdraw and brood about it. They probably will not give any malefactor a chance to hurt them a second time.

They are frequently so sensitive that this placement may be an indication of psychic gifts, as these people are often able to discern the emotional undercurrents in people and their surroundings. They are good homemakers, cooks and parents. Home life is important to them, but they should guard against excessive emotionalism and over-protectiveness.

The mother is seen by the native to be a naturally gifted homemaker and a protector that usually has a great deal of love and affection for her children. If this position is afflicted, however, she may have been seen as smothering her offspring with love and clinging to them in some manner, leaving the child with a desire to flee.

LEO MOON

This placement may give the native the ability to dramatize their emotions. Due to Leo's pride, these people may be a bit self-centered or feel a need to be the center of attention; whatever the case, their pride and confidence are a large part of their self-image.

For some, however, this could be an unconscious desire to be approved of by others, for these natives do have a need for love and affection. It is as if this is proof of their worthiness, which some natives may actually doubt. These people are usually noted for being warm, generous individuals and, because of the fire sign connotations, probably enthusiastic and energetic as well. Their homes may be showplaces of ostentation, but they should be aware of a tendency to dominate the domestic scene.

Usually the mother is seen as a powerful figure with good standing in the community and possibly having a warm and generous disposition.

VIRGO MOON

This placement tends to subdue the emotions somewhat. Many of these people are seen as quiet and humble. They will, however, probably have the same meticulous eye for detail that the sign of Virgo is noted for. These people are generally hard-working and exacting in their work. This may be beneficial for research or craftsmanship where attention to detail is imperative. They are generally of a conservative and practical nature, but may exhibit a tendency to be somewhat critical, particularly when feeling uneasy.

Due to the influence of Mercury, Virgo's ruler, these people may be inclined to nervousness and this could help to bring out their critical side. Just as with the Sun in Virgo, they may allow themselves to get bogged down in minutiae and therefore miss the more pertinent points in a given situation. There may also be a need to serve and concern with personal grooming, hygiene and diet.

The mother may have been practical and efficient, but possibly exacting and critical as well. Their homes are usually kept very clean and much nervous energy may be expended in caring for the home.

LIBRA MOON

People with this placement of the Moon will usually exhibit the characteristics of refinement, social grace and diplomacy, due to the influence of Libra. These people may find discordant relationships terribly upsetting and have a need for harmony in their relationships in order to maintain emotional well-being. This could be Libra's major weakness, as the need for approval may make them pushovers in a confrontation. They have the ability to see all sides of a given issue and have a need to be fair in their interactions with others, but often this leads to the indecisiveness which Libra is all too often associated with.

They are normally gracious and kind individuals, but should learn to look within themselves for the emotional security they seek. After all, they have a right to their opinion, too. These natives are likely to be happier if they take this advice to heart. They may be artistic or at least exhibit an appreciation for the finer things of life and their homes will usually reflect this. They like a tranquil domestic scene.

The mother was probably seen as refined, graceful and fair-minded, if perhaps a bit indecisive and dependent on the approval of others.

SCORPIO MOON

Due to the influence of Scorpio and its ruler, Pluto, with this placement of the Moon the native tends to have very deep and intense emotions. They may not always be aware of what is actually triggering these emotions because all three of these influences (Scorpio – Pluto – Moon) are associated with the unconscious mind.

Usually the medium of exchange, with people and the environment as well as our reactions and responses to them, is likely to be intensity. The emotions are frequently turbulent and the native often possesses a strong willpower and possibly a wide streak of stubbornness. The desire nature may be strong. On the negative side, particularly if this position is afflicted, there may be a tendency toward hostility, jealousy, resentment, vengefulness, anger and possibly violence. They usually feel secure when involved in relationships that are deep enough for the exchange of intense emotional energy.

Often the mother is seen as powerful and possibly domineering. Home life is often in a state of turmoil, but the native usually loves his/her family deeply and, of course, intensely.

SAGITTARIUS MOON

Sagittarius is a sign equated with independence and a need to broaden one's horizons. When the Moon is placed in this sign, it is likely to indicate a need for emotional freedom of sorts and these people may avoid anything or anyone that tries to tie them down too firmly. Obviously, this may play havoc with intimate relationships, particularly if this position is seriously afflicted by inharmonious aspects.

Sagittarius is the natural sign of the ninth house of long-distance journeys, so these people may love to travel or feel a need for activity and a good deal of mobility. This could also indicate residence (Moon) in a foreign country (ninth) or at least far from the place of birth. Sagittarius being a fire sign could also indicate optimism, confidence and possibly recklessness. The ninth house association could make for high moral and ethical ideals and the possibility of a deeply religious or philosophical nature. In order to feel comfortable, these people normally have to have the ability to pursue expanding their horizons however they wish to do so. Routine for these people may be particularly troublesome and destroy their spirit.

Mother probably was not the typical homemaker but left a deep impression of independence. These people may change homes often.

CAPRICORN MOON

Here again we have a sign that tends to subdue the emotional expression of the Moon. These people are often perceived as reserved, cautious, cool, aloof, austere and possessing controlled emotional responses. Actually, many of these people are quite shy, insecure and a bit withdrawn. Capricorn is not noted for self-confidence, at least early on in life; and of course, the Moon is symbolic of our childhood. If taken too far, this can make for a gloomy, pessimistic disposition.

Usually emotional security is tied to material security and the native's standing in the community. These individuals are often all too aware of what others think of them and consequently give these opinions far too much importance. They usually possess a good deal of dignity and are often quite ambitious. This is, of course, due to the need for material security and status. These people may exhibit a need to manipulate people and situations in order to feel secure or at least to suit their own ends. They may be conservative and constant in their affections, but the need to dominate may make them appear a bit cold and could be a source of problems.

The mother was probably seen as quite capable though the parent/child relationship may have been rather cool emotionally. Home life was probably rather materialistic and private.

AQUARIUS MOON

This position lends an impersonal quality to the emotions of the Moon. Aquarius is associated with the broader spectrum of the collective of humanity rather than individual person-to-person relationships. These individuals, though friendly, may appear cool and detached for fear of losing their personal freedom, which is dear to them. For these reasons, it may be easier for them to sympathize with humanity as a whole rather than relate to the individuals within it.

They may be somewhat eccentric or unconventional and possibly inventive. This sign is also associated with the non-conformist and in some cases, the rebel-without-a-cause mentality. Intimate relationships may be tinged with fear of losing their freedom and this may be difficult for their partners to cope with. They may be quite stubborn as this is a fixed sign. Relations with family members may seem unusual to the casual observer and often these relationships are of an intellectual basis and probably based on a broad spectrum of personal freedom as well.

The mother may have been seen as a bit eccentric or possibly an intellectual sort concerned with humanitarian reforms. The parent/child relationship may have been colored with the same impersonal love and detachment that Aquarius is noted for. The adult home is usually noted for modern art and décor or possibly filled with electronic gadgetry.

PISCES MOON

This placement of the Moon tends to a very deeply sensitive emotional nature. The disposition is compassionate and quite sympathetic. This could be an aid to psychic tendencies and these people are often able to pick up on the thoughts, emotions and moods of people around them and the environment as well. Therefore, these people should avoid negative people and environments, for this will be emotionally draining to the native. Some are so sensitive in this regard it may be difficult for them to distinguish between their emotions and those of others. For some, this can be deeply confusing and very disturbing, usually because the native cannot ascertain exactly why they feel as they do.

This is considered quite beneficial for the creative imagination and may denote talents with poetry, music, writing or any of the arts. Some, however, may feel so emotionally vulnerable they may tend to withdraw in seclusion to protect themselves or at least to sort out their thoughts from time to time. Actually, periodic solitude can be beneficial from time to time and may help to return the native to a state of emotional equilibrium and tranquility, particularly if they use their imaginations at these times and direct this energy toward artistic/creative self-expression.

Due to the compassionate, sympathetic nature of these individuals, they may also possess gifts in the healing professions. Relationships with family members are usually very close and warm. The mother may have been seen as warm, compassionate, kind and loving or possibly suffering from the martyr/savior complex sometimes associated with the sign of Pisces. The adult home needs to be tranquil for emotional well-being.
