Sun in the Houses

FIRST HOUSE SUN

This position of the Sun will bring to the forefront the sign traits as quite strong, particularly if the Ascendant is in the same sign. These individuals are generally strong-willed and have a good sense of self-awareness and sense of identity/individuality. Since the will is so strong, they should beware of any tendency to tyrannize others, though usually a strong sense of honor greatly mitigates this characteristic. They should be reminded to be flexible and tolerant as well.

This tends to great initiative and these people will probably want a position of leadership in the things they do. They are very determined to choose their own destiny in life and generally know what it is they want. This placement gives a lot of energy, and normally the vitality is strong and they recover from illness/accidents rapidly.

Here the native must develop his will and ego and, though this placement fosters this innately, it may come about through necessity as well. As was earlier stated, there is no guarantee that the right to shine in the Sun house will be without travail. Often the native comes into contact with other strong ego types and must forge ahead developing the self as a matter of necessity, thereby pursuing the very course these individuals are best suited for. These people may hold back at first, but usually one push too many from other egos close by sets them off in the right direction toward their destiny.

They often attract the attention of others quite readily and their confidence and ambition may elevate their station in life. They should approach life enthusiastically and with vigor and usually do not have to be encouraged to do so. These people need to make a place for themselves in life. It is not enough that this be inherited. They want to be respected for what they themselves have accomplished. They tend to have a strong desire for recognition and to be in the forefront in some way. There is an innate ability to take charge when circumstances allow the native to do so.

These people have a way of letting themselves come across to others with passionate enthusiasm. Most of us hide behind the mask of our Ascendant. Even if a first house Sun Sign is different from the Rising Sign, it still places the Sun right up front in the first house, allowing the Sun to shine through quite readily, whereas other placements usually mean those around us must get behind the mask of the Ascendant to see our Sun Sign identity.

This placement does have some negative connotations attached to it and these natives should be alerted to them if the Sun is heavily afflicted by aspect. The negative traits can include being overbearing, egocentric, arrogant, being argumentative and possibly being prone to conceit and excessive pride.

More positive outlets are called for where the drive for power and authority are concerned. Without this, these people may become cynical and bitterly resentful. As long as they remember that respect must be earned, they usually do quite well. Fortunately these people tend to have an innate knowledge of this.

SECOND HOUSE SUN

The second house is often referred to as the money house. It does, however, include innate talents and personal values as well as raw materials, natural resources, etc. With the Sun in the second, the personal values of the individual are usually identified with strongly. They are frequently able to establish themselves securely in their pursuits. The financial side of life is normally quite stable.

Though financial security is important to these people, they should be cautioned against valuing money and possessions for their own sake and possibly becoming overly materialistic. They make good managers but, here again, if they become too complacent they may refuse to take risks that could broaden their horizons. Over-indulgence is another caution that should be heeded.

One of the more important lessons for these individuals to learn is the proper use of the money and/or resources available to them. This should not be merely for personal gain either, but for the benefit of all. The Sun Sign will give clues to how these people will go about acquiring money and resources and how they will most likely put them to use. They are, on the positive side, usually quite generous individuals.

The Sun in the chart is closely related to the ego. The second, associated with money, means that the establishment of earning ability will be of prime importance to this person. Also, among their number, some of these people may excel at teaching others how to improve or stabilize their finances as well.

With this placement, we find the need for the individual to find and define for themselves what security means to them on a personal basis. Rather than looking to others for security, they must look within themselves to find what they seek. For this position of the Sun, this would seem to be imperative. When any planet is posited within a house, it is recommended that the planetary energies be used there as this is the person's most natural avenue of success in that area of life. With a second house Sun, the attributes that must be developed are those of strength, courage, nobility, etc. These are the aforementioned traits (Sun) that are within, which will foster security (second) for the individual regardless of the amount of wealth in the person's life.

Once these people set a goal for themselves they tend to pursue it, sometimes against the advice of others, to what can be a bitter end. To fail to do so will mean these people will usually suffer a loss of pride. These traits are related to the natural sign of the house, Taurus, and its affinity for willful obstinacy.

If this position of the Sun is afflicted, they may feel that they can achieve status in the eyes of the world by wealth alone rather than through their deeds. They may squander resources for ego gratification or display. They may cling to people, and their happiness may be dependent upon their attachments to people or possessions.

On the positive side, if they look within for their sense of security they can learn to be giving people and share with those passing through their lives. They learn to express themselves in a warm and open manner. Appreciation of money and possessions does not rule their lives. It should be remembered that it is not money but the love of money that was once said to be the root of all evil. It is the challenge of these people to use these resources productively, constructively and charitably. With maturity and a bit of wisdom, they may do so.

THIRD HOUSE SUN

The third house is associated with communication, early schooling, left-brain activity, the immediate environment, siblings, close kin, neighbors, commerce, short-distance journeys (within the borders of the native country), etc. When the Sun is posited in the third house, some of these things will be brought to the fore. Most of these people are referred to as "communicators" and usually are very adept at communication. Also, this house is associated with Mercury, the ruler of the natural sign of the third house, which is Gemini. This association tends to give those with a third-house Sun a quick/mercurial mind which tends toward a great deal of mental energy and a sometimes almost insatiable curiosity.

Mental energy should be focused if it is to be used to the utmost effectiveness. Some of these individuals may find this a bit difficult, as their curiosity may take them hither and yon, so to speak. Also, their facility for communication can tend to them being overly talkative.

Ambition for these people may be expressed through a drive for mental achievements. The drive for intellectual growth can be so strong for some that their motto might very well be, "knowledge is power". The curiosity may give a scientific leaning to the intellect and communication skills could be used in literature.

The ego here will often show itself through the need to communicate, especially where the exchange of knowledge is concerned. No matter how sharp the intellect or how adept the communication skills, these people generally feel that there is always room for improvement.

These people should learn to respect their own thoughts and ideas and not just those of others, although they are usually most enthusiastic when learning something new. The third house, being associated with the immediate environment, also tells us most of these individuals want to be seen and heard as well as valued within their environment.

Sibling rivalry may also rear its head as this is the house of siblings. With the Sun here, it is doubtful that these individuals will deal very well with being "outshined" by siblings. However, much depends on aspects to the Sun as well as the Sun Sign.

Curiosity gives a broad expanse of interests, so the knowledge may be broad but; as mentioned earlier, if not focused it could be superficial. Some of these people are good at turning ideas into reality. They tend to learn very quickly and this is also a skill associated with their personal sense of identity. Normally the mind remains active throughout the person's entire lifetime.

Mercury also grants flexibility to a third-house Sun so that they can adapt to, and communicate with, many different types of people. They should endeavor to keep their opinions from becoming rigid and to remember that communication also involves listening.

On a more cautious note, if this position of the Sun is afflicted, it could manifest as problems with early schooling, sibling rivalry, intellectual arrogance and a tendency to push their ideas down other people's throats. With the intellectual gifts generally granted by this Sun position, the aforementioned warnings should not be too difficult to put to use.

FOURTH HOUSE SUN

The fourth house is associated with the family, the home and the circumstances surrounding the latter part of life and the conditions we find around us at the time we depart this world. This house has the sign of Cancer on the cusp within the natural zodiac and is ruled by the Moon. This is one of the parent houses as well; the other being the tenth house. Traditionally, this house was associated with the mother considering that it is naturally ruled by the sign of Cancer and the Moon. Recent research, however, tends to associate this house with the parent that was least influential in our upbringing. Thereby, the tenth house is usually given to represent the more dominant parent or at least the one who had the most influence upon us as children.

Obviously today, with many single-parent families, it is not a tried and true fact that the fourth house represents the mother while the tenth is left to represent the father. Generally, I believe you will find as stated above; usually the tenth represents the more dominant parent while the fourth will probably represent the parent that was least influential in our development. I must point out, however, that there are conflicting theories on this parent house question. Here I have merely stated my own opinion.

When the Sun is posited in the fourth house, family will be of great importance to the individual. These people will most probably want to establish a secure home and family life and this can be a very strong motivating force in their lives. Finding a place to actually put down roots, however, may not come until later in life and the quest for the right place to do so may take up a great deal of energy in the earlier years.

The first part of life may seem like an uphill struggle, once again reminding us that the gifts we secure in the Sun house may not come to us as easily as we may like. Also, since the fourth house is associated with the declining years, customarily things will tend to improve for these people and they are more likely to come into their own in the second half of life. This may in some way involve real estate or any of the occupations associated with it as well as natural resources or ecology.

As stated earlier, family is quite important to these people, but there may be a catch. Their heritage may come to feel like a trap if they cannot distinguish their own identity from that of the family. This may cause a pulling away and a rejection of their ancestry. This dilemma obviously calls for a balance between their own individuality and their heritage and requires that they have respect for both without letting their background swallow them whole.

One need these people have has to do with soul growth or inner development. For some, this need for inner growth will actually supersede the trappings of success that so many of us perceive to be necessary in the exterior world. But there usually is a need for these people to look deeply within themselves and know their inner motivations and they do have a talent for doing this and understanding themselves.

These people generally nurture their pride and cherish it. If the Sun is afflicted, however, there are some problems that are commonly discernable. There may be excessive pride, particularly where their heritage is concerned, as well as problems with getting along with the parents; the father more so as the Sun represents the father, and they may tend to be domineering in their own homes. Forewarned is forearmed and, on a more positive note, these people have it within themselves to be a nurturer to themselves as well as to others. This is the more positive expression for the energies of a fourth-house Sun.

FIFTH HOUSE SUN

The natural sign of the fifth house is Leo and its ruler is the Sun. The fifth house is associated with artistic/creative self-expression, children, love affairs, speculation, gambling, etc. The Sun posited in the fifth house makes for a very strong placement. This is the Sun's natural house and any planet placed in its natural house is considered powerfully placed as this is its natural domain and where the functions of its energies are best suited.

Regardless of the sign on the fifth-house cusp, artistic/creative self-expression will play an important factor in the lives of these people. This is not to say that they will all be Mozarts or Van Goghs, but these people need to be able to express themselves creatively even if only for their own enjoyment. Many of them find that they can free their spirit in this way and lacking an outlet for this creative self-expression may actually be detrimental to the health, perhaps causing depression or illness.

Another factor where the fifth house is concerned is love affairs. With the Sun here there is the possibility that such affairs of the heart will be many. This does not mean, however, that these affairs will necessarily be happy occurrences. Leo, the natural sign of this house, tends toward a love of the dramatic and there is usually a hell of a lot more drama in an unhappy affair than a happy one! Ergo, these people should keep a sharp look-out for anything that smacks of an abusive partner. This said, I must also add that these people are quite capable of remaining loyal in their love expression. I suppose it is all a matter of whether or not they are expressing love or lust! And of course, let us not forget that flair for the dramatic.

Children also come into consideration in the fifth house. With the Sun here, the family is usually small, and with a fire sign on the cusp of the fifth house it may preclude the possibility of children at all. Also, it has been said that in some cases this may incline toward difficult or dangerous childbirth. The child within us may also come into play here as some of these individuals are accused at times of being naively childish or egocentric. Then again, it is just possible that these people may be able to retain the ability to get in touch with the innocence of childhood that most of us tend to lose as we mature and have to deal with the all too real difficulties of life.

The disposition tends to be sunny and happy, and from this they attract quite a few friends. They may at times be overly theatrical (Leo) and where speculation is concerned, may take large risks due to over-confidence. Hobbies may also take on an important role in their lives as quite a few have been known to turn hobbies into a business concern and many of these people tend to earn money doing something they enjoy.

Sex is of obvious importance and this could mean that they have a natural curiosity, for some of them, about the sex lives of others. Unfortunately, for a few, it may mean feeling some sort of lacking on their part that this curiosity stems from. Then again, where hobbies and business are concerned, this may point a few in the direction of becoming a sex therapist!

The worst problem for most of these people tends to be excessive pride. They should avoid becoming domineering, arrogant, overbearing, etc. There may be feelings of inferiority for them to overcome. And if this position of the Sun is afflicted, they may become manipulative, resorting to devious methods to gain attention. As is said of children - even negative attention is better than none at all! One annoying characteristic of some of these individuals is that they just have to be the center of attention! When there is balance they have self-esteem and respect for their own potentials as well as those of others.

SIXTH HOUSE SUN

The sixth house is traditionally associated with health and work and service to others. The natural sign of this house is Virgo and its ruler is Mercury. The Sun posited here may tend to a delicate constitution, but whatever the state of health, these people are often noted for having the issue in the forefront of their minds. This, if taken to extremes, will manifest as the hypochondriac, so they are well warned not to let preoccupation with their health become an obsession.

Virgo, the natural sign of the sixth, is noted for being mentally keen and this placement of the Sun may give a talent for breaking things down into smaller portions in order to accomplish large tasks. A keen mentality may also be disposed to research where attention to detail is of the utmost importance. These people usually make excellent workers that take pride in their work. However, they will expect adequate compensation and appreciation of their efforts. If these are not forthcoming, they will normally change jobs.

Employers with this placement may be too demanding or authoritarian for some tastes and it may appear sheer drudgery to work for them. Employees of this sort tend to expect many rights and to be appreciated as equals. These people are very duty conscious, however, and should be careful, since this is the house of subordination, about allowing themselves to be dominated. They are quite capable of self-employment.

Instinctively, these people know the best way to safeguard their health and may teach this care to others. Unfortunately, for some of these people, the attention the body needs only comes to mind through illness. But, one way or another, this attending to the body will be brought to the fore. With the Sun here, if it is seriously afflicted, we might see problems with the heart or back problems should health difficulties arise.

Since the ego is so closely aligned with work and service, it is usually imperative for them to develop practical employment skills. They should do this without becoming obsessive about it as well as turning their attention to matters of self-improvement. The trick is not to obsess over these things. These people have a critical, discriminating eye most probably due to the influence of Virgo on this house. This strength can also become a weakness when it is negatively turned on the self and others.

The sixth is associated with health and, it comes as no surprise, people with this placement may very well become involved in the health field. This could include dieticians/nutritionists, pharmacists, as well as doctors and nurses. Physical therapy might be another possibility as well as holistic teaching.

These people have a need to organize their daily rituals or routines to allow their lives to run more smoothly and offer themselves a measure of security in this way. This practical efficiency lends strength to their sense of identity. Through this acceptance of routine and boundaries in life it is said they may refine the art of living at least for themselves.

They should be warned about trying to be perfect themselves or expecting perfection in others as well as we are all only human. They hate for anyone to see their flaws as they are only too aware of their faults themselves. Therefore, they usually take pride in their grooming and appearance.

My personal advice – Lighten up, we all die eventually. That is the bad news. The good news is to learn to live while you are alive. That is what life is for. With your discerning eye, you should be quite capable of finding your way.

SEVENTH HOUSE SUN

The seventh house, commonly referred to as the marriage house, deals with other types of partnerships as well. This includes business partnerships, public relations, the lower courts, as well as being called the house of open enemies, as this too is a sort of one-on-one relationship. Issues concerning the Descendant are centered here and, psychologically speaking, this is where we look for clues as to that which we might tend to project onto a mate. Public relations and how we interact with society as well cover still other issues surrounding the seventh house. The natural sign of this house is Libra; associated with balance and harmony, and the ruling planet is Venus; associated with our affections and pleasures.

It should come as no surprise that when the Sun is found in the seventh house, relationships of all sorts will play a very prominent role in the life of the individual. These people have a great need, as well as an accomplished ability, to identify with others and can usually create a rapport with others quite easily. The need for a life-partner is usually strong and these individuals should be warned about this need too easily turning into dependence. The need for partnership can create conflict for the more independent Sun Sign types.

Another talent these people sometimes possess is a keen ability to adapt and adjust to others - the ability to compromise. This is an admirable trait as long as these people know what they really believe and stick with it. Sometimes these people are too readily swayed from their own course all for the sake of harmony. Venus, the natural ruler of this house, does not like friction or disharmony.

The potential for building very warm, balanced, harmonious relationships exists. However, this may, for some, turn into a fear of intimacy making them shy away from contacts of genuine depth in favor of becoming insincere flirts. Partnership issues again come to the fore after marriage as the affairs of these people generally improve after making a commitment to a partner. Perhaps the spouse may help out in a business as well as in the home.

These people often attract close friends that are loyal and strong; principles of the Sun are at work here as well as the Descendant - what we project onto others. Although this placement obviously favors relationships, some astrologers tend to look upon this placement as somewhat unfortunate. I, by no means, wholeheartedly concur; but, for the sake of principle and fairness, let’s look at this opinion of this position.

It is claimed that in the seventh house control passes into the hands of others. What we project (Descendant) is our solar powers when the Sun is posited here. The Sun is our power principle and will; and, when we project this into the hands of others, it is believed by some, that control passes to them. This is the theory behind the claim that this placement may be somewhat unfortunate. Now, undoubtedly, for some this may be true; however, Lao Tzu once said that woman conquers man through her acquiescence, or something to that effect. Whatever the case, this is obviously a point to ponder with the Sun in the seventh.

What is paramount to remember is that with this position the individual will shape their identity through relationships and interacting with others. If this position is afflicted, there may be a marked inability to trust; a lifelong quest for a father figure for either gender; an attraction to absconding with someone else's identity - this being an ulterior motive for associating with powerful, influential, or famous personalities. Also, if afflicted, they should be cautioned about insincerity; dominating or allowing themselves to be dominated by others. They should not force their will on others and should remember that the seventh house deals with projection. If the motives are pure, the returns on your investments may be priceless beyond measure.

EIGHTH HOUSE SUN

The eighth house is associated with a conglomeration of things ranging from death, taxes, sex, legacies, inheritances, transformation, regeneration, etc. But what I find most fascinating about this house is that this house is associated with the hidden and mysterious; thereby, this is one of the houses closely associated with the subconscious/unconscious mind. Things that lie hidden beneath the surface are eighth-house matters. The natural sign of the eighth house is Scorpio, associated with our passions and motivations. The ancient ruler of Scorpio was Mars; associated with masculine sexual principles and the modern ruler is Pluto; associated with the primal as well as transformation/regeneration.

It is said that the Sun here adds depth to a person's character. However, often this depth is earned through struggle as was mentioned earlier about the Sun's house; we have a natural affinity for that area of life, but may have to face adversity there as well. This, to my way of thinking, may be necessary in order for us to prove ourselves to ourselves in order to find that we are perfectly capable of functioning in this area.

Those with an eighth-house Sun usually feel a compulsion to investigate in some way the hidden or mysterious and possibly dangerous in life. This house is associated with death and natives should be forewarned not to concentrate on the morbid particularly since "death" in this house is usually associated with psychological transformation rather than actual physical death. This meaning when you are an adolescent, you are no longer a child just as an adult ideally is no longer an adolescent and a parent is no longer just the child of their parents but a parent in their own right. This is the death and transformation referred to in the eighth house. However, if you must be morbid and dwell on death, this may be an indication of the cause of our demise and you would most likely want to consider a look at the fourth house associated with the latter part of life as well.

Now let's move along to brighter subject matter and a very primal one at that – sex! These people may have an increased interest in the subject or conversely, without the proper self-knowledge, choose to avoid the subject altogether. The sex drive is usually dynamic and one of the lessons in life for these people will be to learn to live in the physical body in a healthy manner and to appreciate sexuality without becoming obsessive/compulsive about the matter. These people do, however, recognize sex as an energizer as well as an expression of romantic affection and creating children. Most people have experienced that one of the most relaxing states in life is the post-orgasmic.

The eighth is difficult to define, but usually here there is a desire to expand limitations through union with another. Obviously, the symbolic form of this desire is the union of two bodies sexually. These individuals may benefit from inheritance or the desire of others to help them in some way. It is also true that these natives will be endowed with an ability to deal with crisis situations so much so that when others are in need they may well seek out the eighth-house Sun individual for help in a crisis.

Some other interests of the eighth-house Sun may be an interest later in life of the survival of the consciousness after death. The lessons of life may be strife ridden, as these experiences tend to be required to add depth to the character. They may have a talent for dealing with the belongings of the dead or things left as dead such as salvage or possibly archaeology or history. Sometimes this could manifest as fame after death. Also, these individuals are often fascinated by the underlying motives of others, so the subject of psychology cannot be ruled out, particularly since the eighth house is so closely aligned with the subconscious/unconscious mind.

If afflicted, they may be unscrupulous in the use of other people's money; may have unfavorable litigations where legacies are concerned, and may face unfavorable alimony and property settlements in the case of divorce as well as being very judgmental toward themselves and others.

NINTH HOUSE SUN

Included in the ninth house we find higher education, the higher courts, religion, foreigners and foreign countries, long-distance journeys (outside the borders of the native country) and publishing. This house is also symbolic of right-brain activity, the intuitive processes and abstract thought, philosophy and moral values. We can also get an inkling of how relationships with in-laws and the families of associates are inclined to play out. The natural sign of the ninth house is Sagittarius; a fire sign ruled by the planet of expansion, Jupiter.

Those with the Sun in the ninth house have a gift for being able to renew their lives and this ability is due to the influence of Sagittarius on this house. This is the house of the explorer, so to speak, but these journeys may just as likely be mental as well as physical. There is frequently a yearning for new experiences, but the downside could be that the energy is so scattered that their lives become chaotic.

With this placement of the Sun, we quite often find strong opinions about religion, philosophy or ethical systems, which are all ninth-house issues; whatever the case, these individuals tend to have a personal philosophy that they adhere to strongly. They should, however, be cautioned about becoming too rigid in their opinions.

There may be a taste for fine arts exhibited including music, literature and a desire for developing the intellect. These may also occur where the interest for the foreign shows through as an interest in foreign cultures and their art forms. The mind is capable of a high degree of development when the Sun is found in this house. Aspects to the Sun should be studied if there should prove to be a problem in this area, for usually the mind is quite keen.

People with this placement may also make a vocation of ninth-house matters being actively interested in higher education, the law, philosophy and religion. There may be a desire to contribute to the accumulated knowledge of mankind in some way and these people may be drawn to the scholarly life. This could also include publishing where knowledge is disseminated to the masses through writing and the publication of books; also a ninth-house matter. Also, they should be warned against narrow-minded opinions.

A love of travel may be apparent; however, for fixed signs this could mean staying put unless travel is necessary despite the fact that their home may be far from their birthplace. As stated earlier, those that do not actually have a love of travel physically will usually compensate with the mind in extensive reading or merely flights of the imagination. There is at times a need to look into what they perceive as the reasons for existence, possibly through philosophical endeavors.

Since this house has a Sagittarius flavor to it, those with the Sun here might do well to view life as many Sagittarians do, which is to view life as a pilgrimage or journey. They usually want to broaden their understanding or perspective on life, and this is often done in the study and pursuit of ninth-house matters. Rather than taking the studies or beliefs of others and adopting them as their own, these people should be encouraged to quest through many beliefs and systems to find their own personal truth. They should be cautioned against looking for perfection as this tends to lead them into looking continually into the future and losing an appreciation for the present. There is certainly not much use for planning your life if in the process you forget to live it.

If this position of the Sun is afflicted, the faith may have been shattered in some way early in life and this lack of trust may manifest on an interpersonal level. Also, they may attempt to impose their religious or moral convictions on others or have problems concerning other ninth-house matters; higher education, foreign travel, etc. They should be cautioned that others have the right to find their own way just as they do.

TENTH HOUSE SUN

The tenth house concerns our image before the public and those qualities we wish others to see in us. These specific qualities will be influenced by the sign on the house cusp and any planets posited there along with the Sun, and particularly any planets conjunct the Sun or the Midheaven. The tenth also has a bearing on our career and profession. The natural sign of the tenth house is Capricorn, known for being responsible, and the planetary ruler is Saturn, the Great Teacher.

The tenth house is concerned with our public image; and, as you can imagine, those with the Sun placed here are very conscious of their public image. These people are usually quite ambitious and are capable of becoming respected by their peers whatever the career happens to be. This is often a placement found in the charts of politicians and at this juncture there is also a warning I might add; and that is, these individuals should be cautioned about their desire for power. This power principle can become obsessive; and, when the life is lived merely for appearances and power, not only may the life be a shallow façade, but power may be abused. With this position, the abuse of power may very well backfire particularly if the Sun is afflicted by Saturn, sometimes referred to as, "The Lord of Karma".

Generally, however, these individuals exhibit dignity and respectability, quite often believing that it is their task to set a good example for others to emulate. They do tend to be drawn toward positions of leadership and command and, just as when the Sun is placed in the first house, the tenth house Sun has little use for second place. There will always be some sort of worldly ambition and aspects to the Sun should indicate whether or not their goals will be attained with greater or lesser difficulty. Pursuit of their goals is quite important for these people, but they should reconcile themselves to the fact that in most instances climbing to the top may bring along a few enemies in their lifetime. This should not dissuade these people from their goals as long as they are cautioned to keep their principles honorable.

Another important factor concerning the tenth house is that this is one of the parent houses; the other being the fourth. The tenth house tends to represent, in my opinion, the parent that had the most influence on us for good or ill. If this house represents the mother, we may have a case where the child is expected to live out the mother's dreams as in the case of the typical "stage mother". Then again, this collusion of mother and child may be quite unconscious. Children have an uncanny knack for picking up currents in the air – things left unspoken, and, on a very deep psychic level, gear their life toward what they believe Mother wanted. If this should be the case, then at some point the individual will have to ask themselves how much they are doing for themselves and how much is being done to please their mother and thereby gain her love.

If this house represents the father, then the native will want him to acknowledge his accomplishments. Usually, the father is looked upon as quite successful and the child will have a desire to emulate him. If the relationship between father and child is congenial, this is done in a positive sense of comradeship. If, however, the relationship is less than loving, this could manifest as a desire to show the father up by beating him at his own game.

If this position is afflicted, these people may be dictatorial tyrants, abusing power and holding others down through the native's insecurity. They may manipulate the rules or attempt to achieve power through unscrupulous means. They should always remember their sense of honor or Saturn may come to call.

ELEVENTH HOUSE SUN

In the eleventh, we find the house of goals and objectives, hopes and wishes, friendship, organizations, and group endeavors. The natural sign of this house is Aquarius, the sign of the humanitarian. The traditional ruler was Saturn, although presently it is considered to be ruled by Uranus, the planet of change and revolution.

The Sun here will most commonly find expression in group activity of some sort and those endeavors may be directed toward efforts to help those less fortunate than the native. Usually, they have high aims and goals, but should be careful about losing their own sense of individuality where group activities are concerned. Also, they should strongly affirm their own personal beliefs as with this placement we may find the individual believing what he/she is told to believe simply because the group tells them this is what they should embrace.

There may be an interest in occult matters, or scientific endeavors as well as inventions due to the influence of Uranus on this house. They sometimes have a strong ambition to achieve recognition for intellectual or mental endeavors. There is sometimes a desire for leadership over a group, but this is usually done on terms of equality and rarely will these people lord it over other members of a group, but instead may well act as the spokesperson for the group.

These are usually humanitarian individuals with a strong sense of brotherhood to all. They tend to believe in the universal dignity of mankind and view laws in terms of universal toward everyone. They will rarely be biased or resort to favoritism. These leanings may very well draw these people into politics or social work as well as spiritual or religious organizations. These types of organizations can give these individuals the group setting they need to achieve, and usually these people are capable of accomplishing much throughout the course of their lifetime.

Friendships as well are quite important to these individuals and they may make a very strong impact on close friends. This is another of the ways that these people can align themselves with something larger than the self, which is necessary for these people to come into their own. With friendships, there may be the possibility of projecting the Sun qualities onto others. This should be guarded against to ensure that the native retains their own sense of power and will. Aspects to the Sun will give clues to the ease or difficulties these people will have in friendships and group activities.

In some natives, there will be a marked degree of independence and individualism due to the influence of Aquarius on this house. This sign tends to hate feeling trapped or cornered and tends to flee if the ties that bind begin to get too tight. Most of them tend to want companions similar to themselves that they can discourse and study with as well as pursue the truths they may be seeking.

Conversely, some of these people may be loners. This may be due to past betrayals or because of a painful loss. For most, this solitary lifestyle tends to be very difficult for them and life can lose a lot of its luster and become quite trying. These individuals tend to need other people, for their interaction with others seems to be necessary in order for them to reach their full potential as individuals in their own right.

If this position is afflicted, we may find the loner listed above, a tendency to domination of friends or having ulterior motives backfire due to the influence of Saturn on this house as well as a desire to buy their identity by aligning themselves with groups or belief systems. They can avoid this with humanitarian and egalitarian ideals.

TWELFTH HOUSE SUN

Traditionally, the twelfth house is associated with institutions such as hospitals, asylums, prisons, libraries, etc. This is also one of the houses symbolizing the subconscious/unconscious mind, and it is in this area that most people experience the twelfth house. Just as the emotional currents of the eighth house are difficult to tie down, so too do we find the twelfth house defying definition as clearly as the other houses by virtue of its very nature and relationship to the nebulous.

I believe it was Sigmund Freud that once said we all have a desire to return to the womb-state where we can once again experience being at one with the collective. He was speaking about the twelfth house and its issues. So you can see that what is found here is rather complex but, be that as it may, this area is a veritable warehouse filled with valuable gifts for those who know how to tap its riches. This is where we tend to want to lose the individuality we worked so hard for through the other houses and become one with the universe again. The natural sign of this house is Pisces, the sign of the healer/martyr. Its ruling planet in times past was Jupiter; the current ruler is Neptune, planet of the nebulous.

Having the Sun in the twelfth is sometimes regarded as a difficult placement. The theory being that stored in the twelfth house are facets of ourselves we were not permitted to give full expression to in our childhood; and from my personal experience, I believe this to be true. However, those with the Sun here also have gifts that few others possess, so do not despair if this is your Sun house. First among the gifts these individuals have is an ability to minister to others and act as healers. So quite often their leadership abilities function from behind the scenes, so to speak. There may also be mediumistic talents or a kind of ESP due to the influence of Pisces, a water sign, on this house. This placement of the Sun is also associated with people that have artistic/creative talents.

Another reason this placement is considered somewhat less than favorable is not difficult to define. The Sun is representative of our ego and our sense of identity, while the twelfth house deals with crossing these borders where everything is defined into an area where things tend to become diffuse and nebulous. This may produce the adverse reaction some of these people experience where their identity is concerned; namely, confusion not only about themselves but life in general.

Now, let's focus on the positive about this placement. Many of these individuals will be drawn to work in the institutions encompassed in this house. By their very nature, these people are able to minister to others in despair and those at the end of their tether. This is an area where these individuals can excel beyond others. They are quite gifted in their ability to be of service to others in dire straits.

Characteristically, these people are usually shy and retiring, possibly artistic and somewhat withdrawn. This does have a beneficial effect, however, as they tend to pick up vibes in the atmosphere due to the influence of Pisces. Periods of solitude give them an opportunity to offload any negativity they have picked up and allow them to recharge their batteries, in a manner of speaking. For those wanting a more detailed analysis of the twelfth house and planets posited in it, I recommend books by Tracy Marks – Your Secret-Self and Karen Hamaker-Zondag – The Twelfth House. You will not be disappointed.

If afflicted, this placement could mean excessive shyness or neurotic tendencies, unconscious egotism or a desire for power or recognition not earned by the native.
