Uranus in the Houses
Going beyond Saturn we come upon Uranus, sometimes referred to as the higher octave of Mercury, which is generally the polar opposite of Saturn. While Saturn is symbolic of fear and the need for solidarity and formalized structure in the status quo, this planet best symbolizes revolution and change, hopefully for the better but, if not, at least for the sake of change and relief from boredom. The house where it is posited will be where we will most likely feel the strongest urge for freedom and the desire to pursue our individuality. This influence will be connected to the Aquarius house and the ruling planets of the houses and signs involved. Aspects will tell how well we deal with this need for freedom and how adept we are at coping with change. This will not, however, always be under our personal control. Uranus likes to bump us out of our rut from time to time and does this by throwing us a curve, sometimes when we least expect it. This is not always a pleasant experience. This planet fosters change and the desire for freedom and revolutionary thinking, and this often entails some form of struggle either within us or with others. The house where it is posited will be where we tend to have this desire to break loose, but it also is the area where, at least at first, we might encounter opposition from others that are not quite as comfortable with these changes. People are usually timid about change prompting someone to once say: "The only people that like change are kids with wet diapers!" Uranus is the antithesis of Saturn and change can promote the same fear in people that Saturn symbolizes in the chart; hence, resistance. In the house where this planet, and to a lesser extent Aquarius, is placed is where we will find our desire for change challenged by those with more conservative views about the issues in question. This conflict, however, is a restraining factor that causes the native to question their ideals and put them on a more realistic, if not more acceptable, footing. This is symbolic of how society itself changes and grows. Uranus symbolizes the unexpected and the need for change and freedom, and in this house we will feel much better if we adopt this attitude. FIRST HOUSE URANUS The first house is associated with personality development; mannerisms, physical characteristics and our perspective on the world as well as our entry into it. When Uranus is posited in the first house, the native is said to have an electrifying personality and a good deal of magnetism. They could exhibit an aptitude for being inventive and their thinking may be original or at least off the beaten path. These people exhibit a strong need for independence and this could be expressed as rebelliousness toward anything that tries to hem them in. This placement is associated with the unconventional, as others may find the native's behavior erratic and unpredictable. For some, this can pose trouble in marriage. For the more mentally gifted, this is symbolic of possessing a keen mind possibly bordering on genius, as this position has been noted in the charts of some of the great minds of our time. If afflicted, this could indicate a person that is rebellious just for the sake of being different or drawing attention to themselves. This position is also noted to give intuitive insights, and these could be scientific in nature, giving the native a glimpse at future trends on the horizon. One drawback could be too much desire for change causing resistance in others or hindering their ability to accomplish long-range goals due to the need for constant change or excitement. For some, this need for change could take a humanitarian leaning due to Uranus' rulership of Aquarius and could lead this person to attempt to initiate social change. Wherever the native goes, it is doubtful they would be willing to bow to the leadership of others. This is due to the need of these natives to plot their own course in life. Aspects will be a determining factor in this as some are highly individualistic in the search for their own truths while others are unreasonably obstinate. Uranus in the first house of personal identity symbolizes a person that has to find and build their identity in their own way, and it is usually pointless to try and stop them as they will go their own way anyhow. SECOND HOUSE URANUS The second house is associated with personal finances; personal values, innate talents and inner resources and what constitutes inner security for us. When Uranus is placed in the second house, we might expect the financial fortunes of the native to be rather erratic. Aspects will indicate how well the native deals with this ebb and flow, but this placement is commonly connected with sudden gains followed by sudden losses or vice versa. With this placement it would be wise for the native to be conservative in their spending to allow for lean times. They should learn to guard their assets. This may take a degree of effort for the native, for this planet is equated with the impulse toward freedom, and they may spend too freely when finances are good and find later they have no reserves in an economic downturn. For most natives, this erratic financial state is almost assured if this position is afflicted. Look to the house ruler and the Aquarius house for more input as to the source of these sudden financial turns. Quite often, these may seem to be out of the personal control of the native, but before making any hasty judgment the native should question if they have some sort of fear of being tied down in this area. If they do, they may unconsciously set up these reverses to have a way out of what they feel is a trap that impinges on their freedom. To many people with this position money means only one thing – the freedom to do what they want. Many individuals with this position look upon money as little more than a necessary evil and another master they must bend a knee to, and Uranus does not want a master. Others with this position can achieve a good deal of wealth in Uranian pursuits. This could mean through inventions, science, electronics, the occult, astrology, or use of their mental talents. Some will hold as one of their personal values the ability to contribute money to humanitarian and charitable organizations. This position indicates the personal assets the native should cultivate are independence, inventiveness, cleverness. In this way, use of the mind may be profitable. THIRD HOUSE URANUS The third house is associated with the immediate environment; early education, communications, siblings and close relatives, neighbors, commerce, short-distance journeys and how a person thinks. Uranus is noted for ingenuity, inventiveness and cleverness, and when posited in the third house these characteristics are likely to be descriptive of how the native's mind works. They like intellectual freedom and will not allow themselves to be confined by prevailing viewpoints they may find narrow or restrictive. This may prove to be a problem for some in early education. They may prove to be rebellious in formal educational settings as it may prove to be too slow for them. For instance, a teacher once wrote a note to the parents of one of her students noting that "Albert" appeared to be a bit slow. She was referring to Albert Einstein who was probably painfully bored with his lessons. Einstein had Uranus in the third house and is known throughout all humanity for his original thinking. Some people speculate that a person like Einstein only comes along about once every 500 years! The minds of these people, or their way of thinking, may be unusual in some way and highly intuitive. They may exhibit a scientific or inventive leaning. There is openness to new ideas and some may be investigative researchers in fields off the beaten path or in some way unusual. Their best ideas may come through sudden flashes of insight and be far ahead of their times. Their intuition may put them in touch with trends on the horizon. They may become writers in scientific or occult fields. With Uranus here, if afflicted, the mind and thinking processes could merely be erratic. This planet is also linked to astrology. Travel, education, siblings, and close relatives – all these things may be subject to the caprice of Uranus. That is to say, they may be erratic such as moving about a great deal in the early years of life and disrupting early education as well as the environment. Or relationships with siblings and close relatives or neighbors could take on this erratic state or its qualities could be projected onto the other in these relationships. Usually this is an indication of a fast, active, intuitive and inventive mind, but the native should be warned about restlessness, carelessness and jumping to conclusions. For some, being eccentric may just be a means of being different or garnering attention. FOURTH HOUSE URANUS The fourth house is associated with domesticity; the home we grew up in and the home we wish to make for ourselves later in life. This house symbolizes how we tend to end things, including the circumstances at our deaths. This house is also representative of the hidden parent. Uranus in the fourth house is usually disruptive for domestic relations. Places of residence may have changed frequently in childhood or family circumstances may have been altered from time to time, possibly through fate thrusting this upon the native in some way. These individuals are ordinarily independent, though this independence may be a façade hiding a deep desire for something they can actually depend on in their lives. This poses a quandary for some people and leaves them torn between freedom and security. This conflict may have started early in childhood when the native probably learned that circumstances or people could be quite unreliable, leaving them with a fear of being let down again in the future. The hidden parent may have been viewed as eccentric in some way or a free-thinking type. They may have given the native a good deal of independence and fostered the ability to stand on one's own two feet. This parent may have been involved in Uranian pursuits such as invention, science, the occult, astrology or electronics. If this position is strongly afflicted, this could manifest as a parent that was subject to erratic behavior. This parent may have come and gone throughout the native's life leaving the impression of unreliability and a desire for freedom at any cost. This then, could be a source of insecurity for the native and leave them with the same fear of commitment in the future. If relations with this parent were bad, Uranus here usually denotes a rebellious streak toward the parents and particularly the fourth-house parent. Later in life, these natives may establish futuristic-type homes filled with gadgets, electronic wizardry and modern art forms or architecture. Conditions at the close of life may be unpredictable and erratic with placement here. They may wander, refusing to settle anywhere. FIFTH HOUSE URANUS The fifth house is associated with artistic/creative self-expression; romance, hobbies, leisure pursuits, gambling and financial speculation, which may not be wise with this placement. Uranus in the fifth house normally indicates a rather active love life if not a very stable one. These people may flit from one affair to another without a whole lot of thought about it. Or, if they are not inconsistent in romance, they may be attracted to those that are. Love affairs will probably start spontaneously, but just as quickly end for these natives usually do not like to be tied down. Creativity might be expressed in a modern or futuristic form in some way such as modern art or possibly science fiction writing. Hobbies could include any of this planet's pursuits from invention to electronics and computers, science, astrology or the occult. Or they could teach children these subjects. Most of these people are open-minded with children and will encourage the free-thinking that they are so fond of themselves. If this position is afflicted, they may not have much patience with children. As for children of their own, this could be an indication that the native would prefer to forego parenthood. Uranus likes freedom and children entail a good deal of responsibility that would impinge on the person's ability to get up and go. In fact, for those who do have children, this could be an indication of an erratic relationship with their offspring. The child may be the rebellious one that resents the parent encroaching on their freedom or perhaps some twist of fate will separate them from their children such as divorce. This placement, if afflicted, could indicate giving children too much freedom and in extreme cases may even be indicative of neglect. For those with the more harmonious aspects, this could be an indication of brilliance, cleverness, inventiveness and intuitiveness. Financial speculation could be in Uranian fields, but losses and gains could be sudden and the outcome may not always end favorably. SIXTH HOUSE URANUS The sixth house is associated with health and work and service to others. Here we find associations with employers, co-workers and employees. Indications of the attitude toward work and the types of work we are drawn to are also found here. This house can give indications as to the types of health problems we are susceptible to and what conditions may presage the onset of illness. This is also the house of daily routine; diet, domestic animals and our attitude toward maintaining health. When Uranus is placed in the sixth house, it could have a disruptive influence on the native's employment. This planet is not an energy known for stability so this could indicate many changes in jobs over the course of the person's lifetime. These changes may be thrust upon the native through recession, downsizing or other quirks of fate or could come about through the native's own rebelliousness to working conditions. Generally, these people do not like to work under closely-supervised conditions. It is not that they are incapable of producing good or exacting work; it is just that they do not like the implications of being controlled. They work best on their own and choosing their own methods to do their work is important to them. These methods may be a bit unusual to the casual observer, but that is of no consequence to the native. Uranian fields of employment may hold interest for these people; and these include electronics, computers or some sort of advanced technology. This might also include new health regimens or diets. This planet is also aligned with astrology and the occult. Employment relationships are probably lively and exciting unless badly afflicted. These natives loathe boring routine in their work. This could be a placement associated with political labor movements and work in labor unions. This placement, if afflicted, could indicate health problems stemming from tension and stress. Anxiety here could be caused by the native holding in their restless or rebellious nature. For these people it is best to confront and deal with problems head on. This need not be done in an explosive manner, but might be with Uranus here. This placement may indicate that the nervous system is vulnerable. SEVENTH HOUSE URANUS The seventh house is associated with marriage, business partnerships, open enemies, the lower courts, and relations with the public. Anywhere Uranus is found in the chart it is not conducive to stability and the seventh house is no exception. When it is found in the seventh house, this destabilizing influence will be most obvious in relationships. This placement is said to show up in the charts of people that have been divorced and one can easily see why. These people tend to form spontaneous relationships that can be short-lived. They may marry in haste and, finding their freedom curtailed, may divorce just as quickly. Depending on conditions surrounding the seventh-house placement, it may be the partner that is flighty. Generally, these people need a good deal of freedom in relationships in order not to feel as though they are losing their own personal identity. They should remember to allow this same freedom to their partners. The aspects to Uranus will give indications of how successful the native is in seventh-house affairs. Difficult aspects from the personal planets will usually indicate difficulties with seventh-house issues. Placement here tends to attract the native to the eccentric or unusual, and as previously stated this could mean unreliable partnerships. Obviously, this placement may show up in the charts of people that have no interest in marriage; at least not in the formalized legal sense. Business partnerships could be plagued with the same problems if this position is afflicted. That is, of course, if Uranus' need for independence does not preclude partnerships altogether. If these people do form business partnerships their business could run along Uranian lines. This might have something to do with electronics, computer systems, improved technology or advances made in established fields to enhance profits. This position does not preclude marriage or partnerships, but it is always better for the native to live out the need for change and independence themselves. If the native does not do this, Uranus' energy gets projected and others become the source of problems. EIGHTH HOUSE URANUS The eighth house is associated with jointly-held resources; partnership monies, inheritance and legacies, death, taxes, sex, the occult and how we deal with transformation. This is also considered the house of astrology. Drastic changes can occur in financial fortunes for a person with Uranus placed in the eighth house. These shifts may or may not be beneficial to the native depending upon the conditions surrounding this placement. Marriage could radically alter the native's financial prospects or mishandling of funds could cause drastic losses. With this placement it is said that the native can count only on one thing, and that is change due to the nature of Uranus' energy. If the native has foresight and this position is not too badly afflicted, they can plan for these changes and lessen the blow. If, however, this position is seriously afflicted these changes will most likely be sudden and abrupt, possibly producing dire circumstances. Favorably aspected, this position could be beneficial to any investments or endeavors in fields associated with Uranus. These might include any advanced technology, electronics, computers, or possibly the occult or astrology. Uranus is liberal in attitude and this will probably hold true in the area of sex. They probably alternate through periods of hot and cold and exhibit an intense interest in sex followed by periods of cool detachment. This could be due to a bitter disappointment in the early life when the native was first testing the waters sexually. In order to protect their feelings they may push them below the surface, but here they gain power and can overwhelm the native's control, thus making for periods of intense sexual activity. This placement could make for a person that changes sexual partners frequently or practices open-marriage. This could also be a placement indicating confusion of sexual identity and roles – possibly (and only possibly) homosexuality. Some of these people are capable of redirecting the sex drive into other areas of their lives. In some cases, these people may appear cold because they are attempting to free themselves from the control that the desire nature holds over most of us. These people may exhibit an interest in the occult, astrology or life after death. There may be psychic or telepathic experiences uncontrollable by the native. Physics or chemistry could be of interest as well. Transformative experiences in their lives are usually sudden and irreversible. Death could be sudden, with no warning, possibly through an accident or failure of the nervous system. NINTH HOUSE URANUS The ninth house is associated with religion, law and the higher courts, higher education, ethics, philosophy, abstract thought and right-brain activity, publishing, long-distance journeys, foreigners and foreign cultures. When Uranus is posited in the ninth house, the native has a progressive attitude toward higher education. They may exhibit an interest in advanced technology or new fields currently making an appearance on the scene. Or, to give vent to the urge for independence, they may believe that self-education is best for all as it allows freedom of movement to the student to learn in their own way. This may go against the grain to many in the field of education, but this is of no consequence to the native with this placement. Being a bit different is what Uranus is about as well as having the freedom to find the "truth" in one's own way. Religions these people are drawn to are usually considered at least a bit unorthodox. This planet is related to the occult so they could adhere to a cult of one sort or another. Some of these people may believe, as in the case of education, that a person must find the truth in their own way where religion is concerned. If this position is heavily afflicted, there could be a leaning toward fanaticism. Favorably aspected, however, this placement will manifest as humanitarian ideals that may border on the Utopian and not too real in the practical terms of everyday life. Most of the people with Uranus in the ninth house have a need to fit everything in their own personal universe together almost like a jigsaw puzzle, believing that even in the chaos of the cosmos everything has an ultimate purpose. This position may favor writers (ninth publishing) on subjects related to Uranus such as the occult, astrology, science fiction or advanced technology such as electronics, computers, or advanced forms of transportation. These people may lean toward humanitarian and sociological ideals to free man of his toil or to a more equal system of justice for all. Travel for these people may be erratic, but may also open the native's eyes to a whole new way of thinking. Relationships with relatives of business or marriage partners may do the same. TENTH HOUSE URANUS The tenth house is associated with career ambitions, professional achievements and how we wish to be seen in the public eye. This is one of the parent houses and is usually symbolic of the more prominent parent in our development. Uranus placed in the tenth house can have an erratic influence on one's career interests. Sometimes there are many ups and downs in career advancement. Some of these people become overnight sensations and are then just as quickly forgotten. Most of these people desire a great deal of independence in their careers, and this may put them at odds with authority figures as this planet opposes anything that curtails its freedom. For some people, this placement could figure into politicians with advanced ideals for humanity. Karl Marx was purported to have this placement. His ideals, however Utopian and fair-minded, did not stand the test of practicality and did not take into account the darker side of the human beast. This is typical all too often with Uranus. Other politicians have used this position favorably. More often this placement favors scientific fields of endeavor, astrology and advanced technology. The native's ingenuity, cleverness or inventiveness may propel them into prominence with this placement. The relationship with this parent may have been as erratic as the energies of this planet itself. The parent may have been prominent in a field associated with it or exhibited Uranian characteristics. On the other hand, there could have been much coming and going on the part of this parent through their work or because of conditions in the home. The parent may have resented being tied down by parenthood, and the native may have picked up on this unconsciously leaving a similar reluctance in the native. Usually, later in life, once resentment is worked through, the native can learn to value the independence the parent yearned for. Many of these people are ambitious, but they want to be accepted on their own terms and for their own unique contributions to society; perhaps humanitarian in nature. ELEVENTH HOUSE URANUS The eleventh house is associated with group membership, professional organizations, friendships, hopes and wishes and goals and objectives. This is where we may seek to become more than we already are. Uranus in the eleventh house is considered accidentally dignified as this is its natural house. Therefore, this is considered a strong placement for this planet. These people tend to form spontaneous friendships, but as always with Uranus these relationships may end just as abruptly. This could be due to the native's need for independence or it could be that the native projects, and therefore attracts, this in others. It could also mean that the native is drawn to the Uranian characteristics in others and it is not normally noted for stability. Friendships are usually exciting, however. Group associations may lean toward the scientific in nature or the occult or perhaps a blend of both. Placement here could also manifest as a native drawn to societies that are humanitarian and egalitarian as this house is ruled by Aquarius and Uranus. This could also be a placement associated with the revolutionary that believes in anarchy. In extreme circumstances, this could come across with all the subtlety of a terrorist. One problem with Aquarius and this planet is the tendency to detachment and an impersonal demeanor bordering on coldness. This coldness, and a desire for constant stimulation, could be a root cause in the inability or aversion to long-term relationships. As with placement in the seventh house, this placement can lure the native to the unconventional in relationships. Most with this position feel a brotherhood with all of humanity, and this is symbolic of Uranus in the natural house of Aquarius. Generally, they make connections with people who are like-minded and this is also symbolic of its need for independence. If people are like-minded, the native does not have to bend much to fit in. And why would you have to if people have a similar viewpoint about retaining their identity and their independence? They may have high ideals for groups they are involved with, or for friendships, and that is only for the natives that are willing to forfeit a little freedom. Some of these people may choose to be loners. TWELFTH HOUSE URANUS The twelfth house is considered the house of confinement and things that are hidden. It encompasses prisons, hospitals, museums and libraries; both what is stored there as well as the staff. This is a water house and symbolizes the unconscious and things that we are unaware of or have difficulty expressing. Uranus placed in the twelfth house is said to stimulate intuition and activate psychic sensitivity. Some of these people may release this energy through some form of creativity which could prove therapeutic. Many with this placement will face a problem common to this planet made worse by its placement in the twelfth house. This energy is directed toward freedom and independence and the twelfth house is the house of confinement and things that are hidden. This generally leaves the native feeling rebellious, almost as if they had been incarcerated unjustly. These natives will explode from time to time as the pressure to be themselves builds and must invariably revolt against whatever they find constricting them. This may seem like pointless rebellion to others but may be exactly what the native needs. They may repress their own urge toward independence and therefore need these periods in order to eventually learn to assert their individuality without thought to others that could catch the fallout. This could gain them "secret enemies" at first, especially if this position is afflicted, but it is hoped that in time the native will learn to achieve balance. It is my opinion that most of these secret enemies we encounter in the twelfth house are actually facets of ourselves, which hold us back because we lack the experience to express them properly. Natives should keep in mind that reckless behavior could possibly place them in danger. It is said that twelfth house gifts are meant to be shared and not merely used for selfish purposes. Some of these people are very adept at giving advice to others. Many prominent psychologists and therapists have this position of Uranus. Perhaps in fighting a battle with their own demons in order to find a measure of freedom, independence and truth for themselves, they may gain the experience to guide others in this perilous walk through the storm. They can work well behind the scenes. The native must examine the unconscious mind as this will point the way to freedom.
