Uranus in Astrology
Going beyond Saturn we come upon Uranus, sometimes referred to as the higher octave of Mercury, which is generally the polar opposite of Saturn. While Saturn is symbolic of fear and the need for solidarity and formalized structure in the status quo, this planet best symbolizes revolution and change, hopefully for the better but, if not, at least for the sake of change and relief from boredom. The house placement will be where we will most likely feel the strongest urge for freedom and the desire to pursue our individuality. This influence will be connected to the Aquarius house and the ruling planets of the houses and signs involved. Aspects will tell how well we deal with this need for freedom and how adept we are at coping with change. This will not, however, always be under our personal control. It likes to bump us out of our rut from time to time and does this by throwing us a curve, sometimes when we least expect it. This is not always a pleasant experience. This planet fosters change and the desire for freedom and revolutionary thinking, and this often entails some form of struggle either within us or with others. The house where it is posited will be where we tend to have this desire to break loose but it also is the area where, at least at first, we might encounter opposition from others that are not quite as comfortable with these changes. People are usually timid about change prompting someone to once say – "The only people that like change are kids with wet diapers!" This planet is the antithesis of Saturn and change can promote the same fear in people that Saturn symbolizes in the chart; hence, resistance. In the house where it, and to a lesser extent Aquarius, is placed is where we will find our desire for change challenged by those with more conservative views about the issues in question. This conflict, however, is a restraining factor that causes the native to question their ideals and put them on a more realistic, if not more acceptable, footing. This is symbolic of how society itself changes and grows. This planet symbolizes the unexpected and the need for change and freedom, and in this house we will feel much better if we adopt this attitude. URANUS IN THE SIGNS This planet takes approximately seven years to journey through a sign of the zodiac. As with the other outer planets, the house placement is of more personal significance than the sign placement. The sign will, however, tend to color the expression of this planet's characteristics as it does with all the planets. The traits attributed to Uranus and the sign it rules, Aquarius, are associated with an urge for freedom, independence and change. Both Uranus and Aquarius will not only indicate where these urges are strongest for the individual by house placement, but will also indicate where expressing these urges are likely to do us the most good. If we choose not to exercise this option, we often find the more disruptive side of this planet manifesting. That is to say, Uranus and Aquarius may grant us freedom if we use these energies productively and keep their expression within reasonable bounds; or, their placement may indicate where chaos, upheaval, the unexpected and instability invade our lives. If it should indicate the latter, it is usually due to the fact that we are too resistant to change. When this occurs, often unconscious forces push us into change whether we like it or not. The unconscious, if not the conscious mind, knows that change is overdue and tends to push us from our rut. This may not be a very pleasant experience. But usually, the more we resist it, the more tension and force are built up and, consequently, the more chaotic the upheaval is when it does arrive, usually in the form of fate. So, with this in mind, the placement of Uranus and Aquarius in the chart may indicate where others bring change into our lives for us whether we approve or not. Thus, we should exercise our options constructively or the decisions of others may very well force our hand. For instance, we may be laid off from a job we hate, but were too afraid to leave because of the accompanying insecurity this would entail. Or, we could find that a lover walks out on us so that the decision to leave an unrewarding relationship is taken out of our hands; or, we continually find ourselves associating with the most unreliable people possible, and Uranus keeps us dancing through their actions toward us because we do not take the initiative ourselves to bring enough change into our lives. In this way, too, Uranus brings change, but in a manner that is seemingly out of our personal control. The best way to view this placement is to see this energy as a stimulus to growth. Whereas Saturn craves stability, this planet fosters change, for without change there can be no growth. Uranus will urge us to grow one way or another and it is always best if we initiate this growth ourselves. If we fail to do so, it takes the decision out of our hands as we project instability onto others who in turn deliver it on our doorstep for us to deal with. In rather extreme cases, if we hold the energy back for too long, it could indicate accidents or illness. Although usually this is brought about by transit, house and sign placement can indicate this as well. Other Uranus/Aquarius characteristics are associated with humanitarianism, group efforts, the higher mind, advanced technology, computers, electronics, forward thinking perhaps bordering on science fiction, the sciences, the occult, astrology, rebellion, the eccentric, the non-conformist, revolution, invention, etc. All of these characteristics are associated with positive and productive change and it is up to us to see that we institute enough change into our lives in order to grow. Any and all of the above commonly enter our lives through Uranus and Aquarius in our charts. The sign placement will usually indicate how this energy is expressed and give us indications of where and how we wish to express our autonomy in order to keep our lives fresh and rewarding. This will, of course, depend on the degree of influence that Uranus and Aquarius hold in the chart. However, when dealing with these energies, keep in mind that they normally indicate a degree of instability and where we should expect the unexpected! With these warnings in mind, if we do this, we are much more likely to be able to use this energy to foster growth in our lives and to bring us closer to making our dreams a reality.
