Venus in the Houses

The house where we find Venus will indicate the area of life where we will tend to seek out the more pleasing aspects of our existence. This includes social graces and artistic pursuits as well as romance. This house and its condition will temper our ideals about beauty and show where and how we attempt to seek this. This is an area where we will usually experience a state of peace or ease and possibly in some way seek a state of balance.

This planet is associated with union and the desire for relationship. Its house placement and sign will give indications of how we attempt to achieve this while aspects to this planet may give indications about how successful our attempts at doing this will be. This is an area where we can be pleasing as well as where we are most open to being pleased by others. Or, put another way, where we are most likely to seduce and be susceptible to seduction ourselves.

It is associated with the feminine principle and so, before we assume that everything associated with this planet denotes peace and ease, we should remember the saying – "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." Which brings us to one of the down sides of Venus and that can manifest as jealousy. She wants to be seen as the fairest of them all! When it feels threatened by a rival, or someone trying to out-do them, the little green monster of envy or jealousy can rear its ugly head. If this happens, the beauty of Venus might turn into a hideous shrew. Sign placement and aspects to the planet will give indications of what she might be hiding in her arsenal for any would be retaliatory strikes.

The other downside worthy of note is that of self-indulgence. This planet, by itself, may not foster much energy and this could lead to over-indulgence or indolence. With this in mind, it may indicate where we suffer a lack of motivation or are downright lazy.

FIRST HOUSE VENUS

The first house is related to how we go about finding our own personal identity. Physical characteristics may manifest here and the side of our personality others tend to see upon first meeting us.

Venus in the first house will usually bestow charm and social grace. These people often have a pleasant personality and a friendly demeanor. Quite often this placement is said to confer physical attractiveness and is commonly associated with a happy childhood that leads the individual to trust in their sense of self-worth and a positive perspective from which they view life.

These people may be very socially active and, along with good looks, usually have good grooming habits and exhibit taste in their attire. Venus may bestow artistic talents when placed here as well. This planet is desirous of relationship and, when placed in the first, usually indicates an ease at relating to others and a desire to foster goodwill.

Some of the negative manifestations of this placement could include trying to be too pleasant and, in order to maintain harmony, some of them may sacrifice their individuality. If the aspects to Venus here concur, this could manifest as a person that feels a real need for the approval of others and may continually submerge their own needs to garner this approval. This can manifest as a person that waits for things to come to them rather than going after what they want. This would relate to the side of Venus that prefers to attract rather than pursue. On a more calculating note, some with this placement use their ability to relate to others on a more subversive level. Then the seductress side of Venus emerges to gain whatever they can from those they can manipulate.

SECOND HOUSE VENUS

The second house encompasses personal finances, personal values and our inner sense of security. The natural sign of this house is Taurus and the natural ruler is Venus. With this in mind, Venus in the second house is considered accidentally dignified. When it is posited here there is usually an above average love of "goodies". Much will depend on sign and aspects, but these people frequently command a fair wage for their work. They might also be rather extravagant where money is concerned, but with the aid of this planet they can usually afford the excesses of their appetites in this regard.

Venus confers taste, and purchases will usually reflect this, so that their money is ordinarily well spent on purchases of high quality. These people are sometimes accused of having a love of wealth and they tend to equate opulence with social status. This may seem benign to some people, but borders on the mercenary in other regards. Some of these individuals are not above marrying for money or status. Using this planet's charms to gain profit on a personal level may also be a possibility. One could argue that we all do this to a degree, and in that light I would have to agree. I suppose the key word here is – "degree". Some salesmen sell beauty aids and others sell sex. I guess it all depends on what business you are involved with.

At any rate, placement in the second can bestow financial favors on the native. Beauty products or the image of beauty might be financially profitable as well as the art of diplomacy or perhaps arbitration could be dealt in for monetary gain. Not only does this position bestow financial favors, but there are some cautions as well. These might include valuing money and possessions above people. The influence of Taurus here might also make these people tend toward possessiveness, jealousy, envy or greed.

We should not overlook the fact that Venus is associated with artistic/creative self-expression so this might indicate that this person may use creativity as a possible source of income. If they are not actively creative themselves, they may be art dealers or promoters. In any case, they are likely to have an appreciation of artistic beauty and music.

THIRD HOUSE VENUS

The third house encompasses how our mind tends to work; it is symbolic of left-brain activity. Here we find early education, communication, siblings and close relatives, neighbors, short-distance journeys and commerce.

With Venus posited in the third, we might expect the intellectual interests to lean toward the arts or anything else the native happens to find beautiful. There may possibly be a love of communication, and this could manifest as a person who is the epitome of tact and diplomacy or, quite possibly, someone that gives communication a romantic slant such as in literature or perhaps in writing romantic poetry. Writing may be stimulating for them even if done merely for personal pleasure. Some of these people may exhibit the ability to become gifted artists. Maybe a love of languages is present.

Usually, a great deal of pleasure comes through interacting with the immediate environment. This is done by relating to siblings, close relatives or neighbors, and usually these relationships are pleasant and contain a good deal of warmth. These interactions are helped by the social grace and harmonious approach fostered by a third-house Venus. Also, these people may enjoy travel in the immediate environment, which would encourage them to keep close contacts with those in their immediate circle. It encourages romantic contacts as well, and these natives may find likely candidates close to home such as neighbors or someone met through a neighbor.

Usually, the grace of placement in the third house will encourage others to open up to these natives as they sense the warmth symbolized by Venus in the third, easing communications with this native. Where education is concerned, they ordinarily find early school years enjoyable. Sibling relations are normally warm and close and Venus here would ease interaction with all in the immediate environment, making it easy to make friends. Here, as anywhere, this person should be warned against subjugating their needs just to be seen as pleasant.

FOURTH HOUSE VENUS

The fourth house encompasses home life, the domestic scene and is representative of the home and atmosphere we would like to build for ourselves in later life. Here we may find indications of how we tend to end things including conditions at the closing of our lives. The fourth house is also one of the parent houses and usually is symbolic of the parent in the background or least influential in our development.

With a fourth-house Venus we find a person with a deep need to be in an atmosphere that is harmonious and free of strife. This person will find it difficult to put up with an atmosphere where a lot of bickering takes place. They may, however, go too far to ensure peace and thereby undermine their own happiness, so they should be warned to avoid this eventuality.

This is often indicative of a "home-body"; someone that may take a great deal of pleasure in their home and surroundings. This might be done on a solitary level where the home is looked upon as a refuge from the world or the home may be the center for social gatherings and entertaining; either way the home is usually tastefully furnished and even if these people are not rich, the home will ordinarily reflect a good deal of the person's taste. Other domestic pursuits could offer the native peace as well, such as gardening; baking, cooking; decorating or perhaps the study of genealogy.

Where the parent the fourth house represents is concerned, this parent will commonly get the projection of being the beautiful (Venus) one or might be the one who possibly is responsible for the love of, or bestowing of, artistic gifts. If these people exhibit artistic gifts they are quite often shared with this parent such as writing, music, painting, etc. Usually, Venus here would indicate a happy childhood or possibly the home was where artistic appreciation was fostered. Aspects, however, may give a more complete picture of what the case actually was.

FIFTH HOUSE VENUS

The fifth house represents creative self-expression, artistic pursuits, romantic affairs, hobbies, financial speculation and children. Here is where we find how a person likes to play and the type of leisure pursuits they find rewarding.

Venus, planet of love, in the fifth house usually denotes happy experiences in the romance department. Some, however, may be too fond of romantic pursuits and not feel quite alive unless involved in a passionate affair. This could indicate a problem of self-worth for some of these people as they may look upon their ability to maintain an affair as a measure of their self-worth. Whatever the case, they often possess a strong pleasure drive and an examination of aspects and sign placements would give further indications of their constancy in romance.

These people may be artistically inclined where self-expression is concerned and would likely derive a good deal of pleasure in this creativity. They may teach children (fifth) art or art appreciation. Artistic talent would commonly include music, painting or sculpting.

This planet customarily bestows financial blessings and in the fifth house of financial speculation this could be interpreted as financial gain coming through pursuits or hobbies these people find pleasurable. Once again, this could be related to creativity as in selling their artistic works or acting as an art dealer.

This placement usually indicates a warm rapport with children; their own as well as the children of others. Placement in the fifth house is said to predispose toward female children that may have artistic talent and are usually thought of as physically attractive. The fifth house is ordinarily indicative of the first born child. If the children exhibit a flair for artistic expression, these people should be warned to let it run its natural course particularly if their promise was nipped in the bud during youth. Children have a right to their own lives.

SIXTH HOUSE VENUS

The sixth house is related to our work and service to others, and this includes relationships with co-workers, employees and employers. This house is also associated with our health and any indications of illness or disease that we may be susceptible to may make their presence known through sixth-house conditions.

With Venus posited in the sixth house, it is probably an indication that this individual derives a good deal of pleasure from their work and in being useful to others. This is indicative of a person that can interact harmoniously with the work environment, fellow workers, employees or employers. If, however, this person should find the work atmosphere too stressful it could have an adverse effect upon their health. The position of Venus is where we not only seek harmony but feel a need for it as well.

Where this planet is associated to the desire for relationship, we might expect this person to find romantic partners through the work place association or possibly somewhere they carry out a fitness regimen or something related to maintaining optimum health.

Work could be related to the arts (Venus) or possibly the health field (sixth). Artistic work here might also come to be expressed as engineering or design (Virgo). Whatever the work regimen happens to be, there is a good indication that it will be undertaken with precision (Virgo) and an eye to beauty (Venus). These people in all likelihood will enjoy or love (Venus) their work, for they may find any employment situation other than this intolerable.

They may also be physical fitness buffs and follow a healthy diet regimen; both sixth-house concerns. This is beneficial, for with this placement health problems may stem from over-indulgence as well as inharmonious surroundings.

SEVENTH HOUSE VENUS

The seventh house is considered the marriage house and this includes committed relationships, even those not formalized. The seventh house also includes business partnerships and our interactions with society. Here as well we find ensconced "open enemies", and for most of us this will mean characteristics and qualities we do not like or are not aware of about ourselves that we will tend to project onto others. Our open enemies in turn play devil's advocate by bringing these issues to our attention so that we may deal with them in a healthy manner.

With Venus in the seventh house, the native usually has a deep need to be involved in a committed relationship. Projection here might work as giving the loved one the beautiful projection of Venus, and these individuals will commonly endeavor to maintain harmonious relationships with their loved ones. Here again, we should keep in mind the caution associated with this planet, and that is that they should watch how far they go to maintain this harmony. A relationship, ideally, is built on a balance (Libra's scales); and in order to do this both partners need to be willing to compromise. This placement ordinarily does indicate happy relationships and also the promise of financial gain through these relationships. The main caution is having our self-worth too tied up in whether or not others find us acceptable. This position could lean toward artists/musicians.

It ensures harmonious relationships with the public as well, and these individuals might very well profit from these relationships. This is due to the projection of fairness and balance fostered by Venus that tends to help others open up and trust us. Public relations might be financially advantageous and this planet is also involved with diplomacy, and this could very well be a good position for someone in the diplomatic service or even for someone involved in marriage counseling. Venus seeks harmony, and in the seventh house this will be in the area of relationships. Seventh-house placement is accidentally dignified, as this is one of the natural house placements of Venus.

EIGHTH HOUSE VENUS

The eighth house encompasses such affairs as joint financial interests, partnership monies, marital resources, inheritance, alimony, the occult, astrology, sex, death, taxes, and through association with the eighth being a natural water house, the unconscious.

Venus is usually beneficial financially; and when placed in the eighth house, could indicate financially-profitable partnerships and usually denotes gain through marriage as well. Where marriage is concerned, there should be the warning that marriage should be based on more than financial considerations. Where inheritance and legacies are concerned, an eighth-house placement might indicate financial gain in this regard as well.

Pluto is the natural ruler of the eighth house, and one of the keywords for Pluto is intensity. This connection would likely give an eighth-house Venus a strong feeling nature. Relating this to the natural sign of this house, Scorpio, this could make for a powerfully sensual nature or just someone preoccupied with sex. Aspects and placements would have to be taken into consideration here. There can be a down side, however, and this might entail possessiveness and jealousy in the native if they feel threatened.

The unconscious can play a negative role with placement in the eighth house, and that might be that some of these individuals have a deep-seated fear of rejection. This house is usually related to left-over issues from childhood in some way, and with Venus here we might see an individual that has some doubts about their desirability. This could possibly be the motivation behind the sex drive in the eighth house – the need to continually prove one's worth in the eyes of others. In the eighth house, Venus may go too far by trying to please on a sexual level merely to maintain harmony and assure themselves that they are worthy of another's attention. Eighth-house Venus, however, does tend to bring gifts both financially and sensually.

Death for these individuals is usually believed to be peaceful.

NINTH HOUSE VENUS

The ninth house encompasses right-brain activity; higher education, religion, philosophy, the law and higher courts, publishing, long-distance journeys, foreign cultures, and relatives of marriage and business partners. The natural sign for the ninth house is Sagittarius, which is ruled by the planet Jupiter. Jupiter and the ninth house are sometimes associated with how we attempt to find meaning in life, so ninth house planets, and underlying conditions, may hold personal significance in this regard as well.

With Venus posited in the ninth house, we might expect this person to love travel and especially outside their native country. This planet is related to union, however, and so would probably want traveling companions. Along these lines of thought, we may find a person who might find a mate while traveling abroad or a foreigner visiting their country. Mates could also be found while studying at a university.

Venus is associated with art, and in the ninth house of higher education could denote someone that favors this course of study and who might go on to teach it as well. This could also indicate the study of art forms of foreign cultures. This study might also be associated to religion through the study of religious art or music.

This planet is symbolic of a desire for harmonious relations, and in the ninth house of foreign cultures this may manifest as being quite beneficial to someone in the diplomatic service. Here Venus might express its desire for harmony and fairness in such a way as to gain the trust of others engaged in diplomacy to defuse potentially explosive situations in international relations.

Venus, also associated with financial gain, in the ninth house of foreign cultures might prove profitable in the import/export trade or could gain from translating and publishing (ninth) books in foreign languages for consumption at home. This might also be an indication of financial gain through higher education or relations with relatives of partners.

TENTH HOUSE VENUS

The tenth house is associated with career, business and professional accomplishments, our reputation and how we wish to be seen by others. How the relationship with the more influential parent in our development was perceived by the native will be found in tenth-house conditions as well.

With Venus posited in the tenth house, we might expect the native to have career ambitions related to the arts in some way. This could be as a promoter, musician, an artist, art dealer or possibly even as an art critic, for she may get her hackles up about anything that offends her aesthetic sensibilities.

These people are usually considered charming and graceful and the power of Venus to attract may be used in some way to further career ambitions. One should be cautioned against mercenary motives in this regard, but in the tenth house Venus does tend to ease relations with the opposite sex. This planet's desire for harmony may also be found in the tenth house to be beneficial to diplomats. Relations with people in power are said to be aided by a tenth-house placement. One possible superficial manifestation of a tenth-house position might simply be vanity. She wants to be seen as the fairest of them all, and in the tenth house might simply imply that a person is vain. This could, however, foster success in fields where beauty is important such as modeling or the film/entertainment industry.

Where the tenth-house parent is concerned, this parent will be the one who got the beauty bestowed on them - the beautiful one. This could manifest in a number of ways. This parent may have been the most diplomatic in dealings with the child and attempting to foster harmonious child/parental relations. This parent may have exhibited artistic gifts and shared these with the child or might literally be looked upon as the most physically attractive, or downright vain, of the parents. Where the native is concerned, we should look at underlying motivations as to why this person wants a particular public image. Venus has a proclivity to sometimes go too far to please others. In the tenth house, this could mean choices made merely to please the parent in question.

ELEVENTH HOUSE VENUS

The eleventh house is associated with friendships, group associations, professional organizations and one's goals and objectives, wishes and desires. The ruling planet of the sign on the house cusp and planets posited here will hold influence on the above.

Venus is associated with a desire for union and relationship. When posited in the eleventh house, we might expect to find this person very socially active and, combined with the popularity that it confers, we might also expect this individual to have many friends. This position tends to popularity with the opposite sex, so it would be of no surprise if most of this person's friends are of the opposite gender. This planet is also associated with the arts, so this person may number a good many artists or musicians among their friends and acquaintances.

A warning with this placement, which is generic to all Venus positions, is that there may be a tendency to go too far to please others. This native may then attempt to become what their friends want them to be merely in order to please others and fit in. On the opposite end of the scale, if this position is found in the chart of a person that tends to be superficial, they may associate with others merely to be seen as part of the "right crowd".

They do tend to be kind to their friends and this, in turn, usually leads to them being treated kindly by others. They may choose to join groups that in some way try to help the less fortunate. The desire for relationship associated with this planet could lead them to a mate that was once a friend or found through a friend or organization that they belong to.

These people usually bring a harmonizing factor to eleventh-house matters. They can make friendships that last a lifetime, but should be careful of being too possessive. The eleventh house, however, is associated with the sign of Aquarius. Although this could lean them toward humanitarian pursuits, it could also tend to make them fearful of losing their freedom.

TWELFTH HOUSE VENUS

The twelfth house is associated with confinement such as prisons and asylums and those held there. It also includes museums and libraries where information is stored and those who work in these institutions. The twelfth house also refers to things hidden such as "hidden enemies" and things that we repress or have difficulty expressing. On a personal level, it is this last that probably concerns us most as the twelfth house is symbolic of the unconscious and things hidden there we have difficulty, or are fearful of, expressing. The twelfth house is where we want to go beyond and meld with the collective of humanity. It is usually beneficial to use the gifts hidden in the twelfth house not only for our own sake, but to share this with others as well. When we learn to express our twelfth-house gifts in this way, we can become happier and healthier people.

Venus posited in the twelfth can make for a very compassionate and sensitive individual, not only through the qualities associated with this planet, but also through the association of Pisces, natural sign ruler of the twelfth. These people may have had painful love affairs of which one may have been particularly crushing. This may keep them searching for perfection in love and this usually leads to disillusionment as people are not perfect specimens. They may feel a need to sacrifice (Pisces/Neptune) for the sake of love and set themselves up for disappointment if this sacrifice goes unappreciated. Venus does tend to go too far at times, but this tendency in the twelfth may be particularly pronounced, as the twelfth is where we want to go beyond the mortal coil. Twelfth-house Venus should be careful about who they bestow their affections upon. What they see may merely be an illusion.

This position can give rise to talented artists or musicians and this could prove therapeutic for releasing this planet's energy. These people may love solitude, but this should be tempered or could lead to shyness and loneliness. I have seen this in the charts of natives who felt their parents were distant and cold, thereby hindering the expression of the native's affections. These people can have extraordinary compassion for those in need. They should, however, have firm boundaries because they can be pulled down and their efforts made ineffective if they lose themselves. As mentioned above, art, music and writing may help heal and release twelfth-house treasures.
